Igor

I had little problem this morning - I really hope it is just a little problem.
I had a minor crash while riding a road bicycle, I fell down a bit harder than I think I needed :).
I was going with the speed around 17 mls/hr and something happened with my front wheel (still do not know what) and I went up over my head, scratched my lower back , got a couple of scratches, bruises little cuts on my legs and the worst think is that I cut a bit seriously my right elbow which then in ER was diagnosed: wit a little chip too.
the doc put a few stitches on my elbow then they put my right arm a splint (or what ever it is).
The doc was very confident that I should not go off the coumadin and that the stitches hopefully might be taken off in 10-15 days.
The also gave me a shot an antibiotic and prescriptiond to take one and another shot od something else because I went down on the pavement.
I have been bicycling for the last 5 years and had never had anything like that.

Now the questions part:
- had anybody had anything like that while on coumadin?
- the doc mentioned that the trauma like this increases the possibility of clots ???
- should I be doing anything special?

Six weeks after my AVR I tripped on a paving stone and landed on my knee which left me with a very nasty graze and twisted my ankle

Later that day my knee and ankle were so swollen i could not walk, I went to the ER and they xrayed it and found I had chipped the kneecap i was given a tetanus *** and crutches to help me walk

Four days later i was in agony so returned and a further xray found i had chipped a bone in my ankle, so was put into a splint

I developed a Haematoma the size of an egg on my knee
which they drained and I was put on a 2 week course of antibiotic
The bruising was horrendous and lasted for weeks, but i still took my warfarin, my INR increased slightly but when I finished the antibiotics it returned to my normal range

just keep check on your INR

and try not too worry

Jan

You should be fine outside of hurting. I suppose it's too late to tell you to be careful? Check your INR in a few days to see if it needs adjusting.

Oh Igor-

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. How terrible.Thank God you weren't hurt more seriously. What happened was bad enough, but it could have been much worse. I don't have much in the line of advice except to say be very aware of your body and any different feelings, and most of all rest and take is easy. Take your temp a couple of times every day.

Take care and be well,

Hey Igor - Your doctor would never reccommend this, but if I had a wreck like that, I'd climb into my favorite Lazy Boy with a good book and a big glass of Tennessee sippin whiskey.

Igor those little bitty Florida rocks will get you every time - and you never even see 'em! Hope you are feeling better. I noticed Jan answered your question immediately. Where else, except VR, could you get an answer to the question you posed. Thanks Again, Hank. Hope you repair quickly, Igor.

Hi Igor

Hi Igor

Glad you were wearing a helmet. You were..weren't you?:D Now, that you posted..I can post too..clumsy me..had on bedroom shoes to run out to car..Went down the steps and took one up step. Yep, bedroom shoes caught on top part of stone steps..and down I went. Landed hard on left side. Now, I know, why God gave women larger breasts.:D Cushioned me.:p but top rib is sore. NO bruise. INR stable..but I am watching to make sure I don't get short of breath. I am spending 4 days at son's house and Doctor is around the corner. We, valvers get so comfortable with our new health..then boom ..something happens to make us realize to be more careful:) Don't wear bedroom shoes outside and don't bike. Bonnie

Hi Igor,

I am glad you are doing alright.and it is a good thing you did not hit your head . Your limbs may be really bruised and battered but I think they will heal up fine.

Did they check your INR in the ER?

I took a corner too sharp this morning and whacked my elbow on a cabinet. My INR was 6.1 on Thursday and we lowered my dose. By the look of the huge egg I have I don't think it is within range as yet.

Do you have a medic alert on you? After reading your post it reminded me I need to get one as I don't have a sternum scar to tip health care providers off.

I hope they warned you that you might feel like you got hit by that truck again tomorrow and the next day might be even worse.

I don't think I would worry too much about being more prone to developing clots right now. Keep moving around and take your warfarin and you will probably be fine. (My personal opinion)

Igor and Bonnie -

I hope these difficulties go away for you soon! Best wishes!

Hi Igor,

So sorry to her about your accident. You did the proper thing by going to the ER. I would just keep and eye on your wounds to make sure they don't get infected. Neosporin ointment may be a good idea.

Well, I feel really stupid. Was not going to post this out of embarrassment. Earlier this week we had a few new tress planted. Also having a brick walkway put in. I went out to water in my new beauties....proceeded backwards with the hose. Tripped backwards over the pile of bricks (was not aware they were there) landed flat on my back. Hit my head on the ground. Not too hard. Did manage to knock the wind out of myself. Of course I was alone and scared to death. Thankfully nothing seemed to be wrong. By right, I should have went ER:eek:

Hope you get to feeling better soon!
PS. Bonnie, hope you are ok too! We should start a new club for klutz's amoing us, LOL.

Thank you for all replies

Thank you for all replies

Thank you for all replies.
Valvereplacement.com is a wonderful place and I feel better already.
It's almost 10 PM EST and I wish I could have a drink or two instead of pain killer pills and antibiotics.
Hopefully I will do that in a couple of weeks.
Yes, I was wearing a helmet and they did check my INR in ER, it was 3.6.
It has been a really tiresome day for me. Thanks again for all your replies.

Clumsy me

Clumsy me

Hi Igor,

My incident was when I fell down the entire flight of my basement stairs on my head! Needless to say I looked like I had been beaten up severly. Except for the embarrasement of looking like this I survived. Actually I expected that falling on my head with an INR around 4.1 ( I think) would have given me a subdural. Go figure my CT scan came out normal. ( I had a subdural without falling about a year or two prior to my fall). I had also hurt my left knee and had scrapes all over my left side.

You should be fine, but just keep a close eye on everything. Good luck!

I don't know if this qualifies me as a "klutz" or not, but here goes:

Yesterday I was playing with my dog. He's a 60 lb. "who knows what" and very playful. I always come away from a bout of playing with him with at least a few bruises. And I live my life with bruises on top of my feet from him running across them when I least expect it. Anyway, we were playing and I was smacking him around (he likes that) when my hand came in contact with his teeth. Not normally too big a deal, but this time the bone at the base of my thumb is what hit him. Boy did that hurt! And now, more than 24 hours later, it still hurts like crazy. You can't really see much bruising, but if I bump it, or move my thumb just "right" it reminds me it's there. Hubby seems to think that if it doesn't start feeling better I should have it looked at. But there isn't any swelling, and the bruising hasn't even come to the surface (yet), so I really don't think it's THAT bad. Just painful. I have to wonder if it would hurt this badly if I were not on coumadin....

Just thought I'd add to this "boo boo" brigade! ;)

Hi Igor,
I, like Gisele, fell down an entire flight of stairs......the bruising was incredible, so I think that is what you might expect, a great deal of bruising, which may continue to get worse for several days.
It may also continue to hurt quite a bit.

There really is not too much you can do for it except wait for the body to re-absorb, unless you have become anemic due to the blood loss into areas where it is not supposed to be !! They were talking transfusion for me at one point, but it did not come to that.

I hope that you feel better soon. Just take it easy.

Hi All...
A "KLUTZ" club would be great....and I would accept nominations to be president. Since both AVR's, I have been involved in two fairly bad car accidents,(not my fault) both of which left my "2.8" all over the place, as well as broken ribs, a broken right elbow from tripping over a dog while running, a deep cut on my left anke caused by a sharp corner on a storm door, requiring 25 stitches, two "head hits with goose-eggs"in my former house at the arched-doorways, ( not designed for 6'4" people...) a "world-class" nosebleed from catching a basketball in the face ( this one alone qualifies me for the presidency...) and a thousand other incidents that while non-descript, resulted in bleeding, knotting, clotting, stitching and certainly, humility........ Everyone, be careful out there! It's a cruel world! :)
