Maybe this is a non-issue but I figured I would ask those with experience before calling doctors and such. The last few days seems I've been developing a bit of a head cold, some sniffles, a tickle in the back of my throat. Not really coughing much or anything but certain feeling less than 100%. I was just at the doc earlier this week he listened to my heart and valve and said everything sounded great. This was before my cold came on.

So now the question I have is do I need to be worried about this with an artificial valve ? Should I be running to the doc for anti-biotics for a fairly simple cold ? This is my first instance of not feeling 100% since the surgery. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Scott, the majority of colds are viral in nature and so antibiotics won't do anything.
The best thing you can do is rest, keep hydrated, and enjoy some home made chicken soup.

Ditto....It is normal to get a little freaked....I did not have so much as a sneeze for almost a year and a half after my AVR...then bam....sinus infection, bronchitis and the flu....I survived...felt like crap but I survived....cardio and PCP were not really concerned....I took antibiotics for the bronchitis and sinus infection and rode out the flu with plenty of fluids and a poked out lip:D

I stopped on my way home and brought some Tylenol Cold capsules. I will give them a try and of course the chicken soup route. Just want to be sure that if I do get a cold going I don't need to worry about the valve.

From experience, keep an eye on how you cough and how the chest feels when you cough. I too thought it was just a cold, but to be sure I went to the doc and they heard something in my chest......yep.....I was been on antibiotics.
