I'm 7 weeks PO from Aortic Valve Replacement. I just had a miserable weekened and so far not a great week other than Monday, that was good. But lately I've been getting nautious, I've been burned out, fatigued, and annoyed..I've also felt very faint at times.

Now I haven't experienced the Nautious part really since surgery..the rest has been consistent, however the Fatigue and Tiredness has become worse. I'm wondering if I'm having vertigo, because the nautious comes with movement on tv, or just walking. Also it's weird, when I'm in a car..we are moving, but it feels like I'm not moving at all, like I'm not getting any closer to where we are headed, like the vehicle is stationary but everything outside is moving, if that makes sense? I don't take naps and maybe I should, and will help with being tired. But the faint and fatigue I do t know what to do, am I just at that stage of my recovery?

The only new meds I'm since surgery is Metropolol, and as of maybe 3 weeks I was put on Singular, which I had no problems with, I find it weird that symptoms would just now start occuring.

Anyways, the nautious aspect of all this is just really not making me feel great, and everything else has just caught my attention and has me keeping an eye on it.

My head has been a mess for a few weeks now too and I'm not sure if it's related.

Any thoughts on what any of this could be? I'm not freaking out, but it's something new, and I'm not liking it.

Thanks.

I'd recommend getting bloodwork. Have them check pancreatic enzyme levels. Mine were elevated, which made me pretty nautious about three weeks post op. Levels eventually came down on there own for me, but it at least gave me peace of mind to know what was triggering the issue.

Now, you're seven weeks out - so I have no idea if the same thing would be applicable in your case, but it at least gives you something to start with.

Ovie - One thing I do remember is that metoprolol can cause tiredness,light-headedness, vertigo, etc. - which might also be the root cause of your nausea. Have these symptoms started about the same time you started metoprolol? If so, maybe discuss with your cardio and maybe they can change you to a different beta blocker. I've been taking metoprolol since surgery and I think I tolerate it fairly well. We did reduce my dosage, because I had no energy and couldn't get my heart rate to increase for exercise.

Do you have allergies? I know after my first surgery I had a hard time with sinus drainage in my tummy making me nauseous and vomiting. Allergies can also make you tired because your body is fighting back. I also had car sickness after my 2nd surgery. I couldn't ride in a car for almost 6 weeks without a bucket.

Should I ask specifically for them to draw blood for that?

I've been on Metropolol since I opened my eyes from my surgery, I was at 25mg twice daily, but now I use a pill cutter and take 12.5mg twice daily. It really hasn't given many problems that I noticed, I do t know why it would now.

Yes I have allergies, lots of them..I actually go in for allergy testing Tuesday l, since it's been awhile. My head feels like its in a vice grip, except without pain. In place it's just nausea and a dull ache.

I see my doctor on tuesday as well so I'm really going to push this on him, he always just says " from
Your surgery, yada yada yada" with no tests or anything of the sort. It may be..and this is just a time in my recovery where it's bad. But I need a peace of mind that while I'm walking down the hall feeling like garbage and faint with dizziness, that this is just all "normal recovery".

EDIT: I'm going to ask in the Singular, that's the newest med and the side effects of it are ridiculously long, but I've been on it 3 weeks, wonder if it just took that long for things to start bugging my system.

Ovie,

Glad that you are seeing your doctor who will be able to detect the main cause of your symptoms which could be related to either medical condition among which it could be an inner ear infection; or to STRESS which is normal after such a surgery and which can hit us at any time; or to the side effects of medication.

Try to stay hydrated, if you are not drinking enough fluids.

Keep us posted.

Oh I stay hydrated :) I have a bottle of water next to me or with me at all times. I'll let you know the 411 if I ever find out. I just can't handle it anymore.

Your metoprolol dose is very small. Singulair is not the best tolerated allergy medicine and as you were started on it 3 weeks prior to the appearance of your current symptoms, I would put it on the list of suspects. It sounds like it could be a a lot of things (flu, etc.).

I'm actually on the Singular to help with my breathing, but it's the only explanation I can think of. However I'm going to have my ears checked, and for all I know it could be sinus related, I've been having an ugly pressure in my head since its begun and its defiantly a stuns related feeling. Maybe it's causing other issues to occur. Anybody have any good sinus medication recommendations for someone with AVR, I know there are certain things I need to avoid in some medications.

Another thought, Ovie -- Since you mention sinus type of pressure, are you taking diuretics (water pills)? These could dry out your sinuses enough that the normal mucus just sludges up and can't drain, leading to all sorts of pressure, headaches, dizziness, etc. Since my meds act to dry me out a lot, beside being sure I drink plenty of fluids, I also take Mucinex tablets (over-the-counter) which contain guaifenisen - a medicine that helps to keep sinus mucus thin and moist, so you can cough it out or it can drain. Just another thing to think about. . .

Very good analysis/explanation, Steve. :)

Not taking diruetics that I'm aware of. I'll look into the muscinex, I'm to the point of trying anything short of drilling a hole in my skull. Hoping my doctor has some answers, the nausea and pressure are just a couple things that seem to be going wrong upstairs.
