darn, I hate this, I got so dizzy tonight I could barely stand up. Bp and pulse were normal so I tried to ride it out. No chest pain. A few months before my surgery 5 years ago, I had this, was taken to ER in ambulance and checked out fine. ER doc thought maybe it was inner ear thing. I am thinking it may be dehydration this time. I know I have been sweating like a horse and not drinking enough water. I am trying to hydrate now while witnessing a huge thunderstorm...so if i ever get to sleep, I hope I wake without dizziness. But first I hope I just wake. Okay peace out.

Very Likely an Inner-Ear thing. I've heard of a few cases locally. Hard to pin down exactly, but proper hydration (not too much and not too little...sometimes tricky to do) is very helpful. Sinus issues due to Allergies have been common this summer in North Alabama.

One technique used by ENT Doc's is to have the patient sit on a bed, lean over to one side for xx seconds, then rotate to the right for xx seconds and finally sit up. This supposedly helps to 'relocate crystals' in the fluid in the inner ear and hopefully have them settle in 'less sensitive' areas.

A visit to an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Doc might be a good idea.
Beware the "Blow in your Ear" Test... I've never been so Sick! (threw up bial... NOT Fun!)

With the way the heat has been, it very well could be dehydration, that is if you live in the steamy Northeast. I have been getting dizzy every time I get up. But, I don't have heart issues. So, if you are going to feel anxious about it and won't be able to sleep, maybe you should have it checked out just for peace of mind. Good luck! Barb

Good advice. Blood sugar levels and inner ear stuff.
I get vertigo from my inner ear "rocks" (canaliths) being out of place. There's a manouver on line to re-set them. Google benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, treatment is the epley maneuver, here's a video. It works.

I've also gotten dizzy from inner ear barotrauma, which is why I don't dive any more.
Then there is ear congestion, and dehydration, and, and, and.

Things seem to have gotten back to pretty stable this morning, thank goodness. Will check out the inner-ear techniques, thanks. Don't believe it was blood sugar this time, but I should have checked it last night along with bp and pulse. Great to have a place like this to come to when episodes like this occur.

I have ha several "get up to fast" dizzy spells, and some related to arrythmia. Unrelated I have had three spells where it was pure vertogo, where everything was spinning. It felt like I drank a bottle of Rum and was still awake. These seemed to have passed on their own.

Was yours a dizzy spell or do you think it may have been a form of vertigo

I've never understood the difference between dizziness and vertigo. All I know is that if I needed to walk from point A to point B, I had a terrible time. Felt like I would fall over; was disoriented (and no I hadn't been drinking). If I laid back in my recliner or in on my back in bed, I felt okay.

I've got to say that dizziness with heart people, scares me. Joe had many dizzy spells, and he also had a couple of outright fainting spells where he injured himself and one in particular that I watched happen as I was coming in the door and he was walking to greet me. He fell right over like a tree in the forest flat on his chest and face, just missing the corner of the dining room table. I believe this one caused the stitching on the sewing cuff of his newly implanted mitral valve to leak, because after that he had problems. Another time he was outside adjusting the lawn sprinkler and fell right on the head of the intermittent sprinkler and he had large bruises and soreness by his spleen.

It turned out that he was having episodes of bradycardia, maybe heart block, and when he had a pacemaker implanted, it took care of the problems.

I think you should speak to your doctor about this and maybe get a heart monitor for a month or so to see if this is heart related.

I think it would be a wise precaution.

Coming from you, Nancy, this merits serious consideration on my part. My GP at my last visit asked me if I'd ever been aware of having AV block, and then gave me an electrocardiogram, which seemed to show everything was okay. He didn't say anything else then, but maybe the dizziness is relevant. Hopefully it is one of the many other things that can cause dizziness.

Yikes, Bob ... hope you get this figured out..... :(

Bob, When I had experiences like that, it was diagnosed as inner ear. Not fun, but perhaps reassuring compared to alternatives. Dehydration could be part of it too. I hope it is all in your past.

Hi Bob,

Well everyone here seems to have covered it. If it were me, I would call my cardios office and have it checked out. I have had dizzy spells in the past, that had nothing to do with the heart though. Inner ear can cause alot of problems.

Hope you get this resolved, and please give us an update. Take care

Thanks again for all the caring responses here -- just realized I hadn't updated. Haven't had any more serious episodes. Think it must have been this blankety-blank heat -- dehydration. I am drinking vitamin water and regular water now. We are supposed to go to a minor-league baseball game tonight with the Mended Hearts group, which I have just joined. Hope we can manage at least a few innings. It is hot, hot, hot even at 7 o'clock, too.
