That is amazing. I'm so happy RCB shared this with all of us. I'm just as sure your fascinated by it too! :)

Al - My Brother in law has one of the Starr Edwards installed in the early '70's and while it has started to leak a little, it still works just fine. He may need another valve replaced in the near future and if so, they will replace the Starr Edwards as well. If you guys think your newer valves are noisy, you should listen to one of these babies. By the way, I asked my brother in law if he had any horror stories about Coumadin given that he is certainly a long time user. He really only had some minor stuff to talk about, and he remembers the early testing procedure. Chris

That's amazing! What a picture. Joe still has his spherical Bjork-Shiley valve. It's 26 years old now, and still working well, last time it was checked.

Wasn't this one taken out of Gisele yesterday? I'm so happy she is doing well...no more coumadin to make her bleed. Bonnie

Joann had 2 Starr-Edwards installed in 1971. They lasted until 1999. You could hear them at least 20 feet. Our dog would play games to find Joann by listening for the clicking. I had to wear ear plugs or a headset. She wore a watch on her sweater when she taught Sunday School so the children would not be afraid.

Life goes on and we are VERY grateful.

Things are going some better the last few weeks.

GO BUCKEYES. Next week is michigan. Notice NO CAPS!

MY Goodness!

MY Goodness!

Al,
Thanks a bunch for posting this article and photos about the old valve. Is that archaic looking, or WHAT?? I remember the blood test where they added drops of blood to the reagent, (which was partially dried rabbit brain) and then rocked it back and forth holding it up to the light until "threads formed". The had a stop watch in their other hand to determine "bleeding time". HA! My CoaguCheck machine beats the heck outta that, AND no more killing of rabbits!
