Since came out from hospital 3 weeks ago, I 've been doing outdoor walking from the beginning of 20 min to now about 45min or more, and shopping, groceries etc.
But weather now in Toronto is getting cold, this afternoon while out for walking the cold wind really unbearable though I dressed warmly. I am thinking of going back to GYM tommorrow to walk the treadmill to begin with and gradually starts other exercises. As of now I am 41 days post surgery, I think treadmill walking will be the best one to start with for probably a month or 2, then do some light weight exercise later. Someone can give me some guideline as to exercise program for post surgery patient.
Thanks

Hello!

My husband had his aortic valve replaced 7+ weeks ago. We leave in Northern Minnesota, about an hour from the Canadian border so we can identify a little with your weather :)

Have you considered a cardiac rehab program? Nathan is 34 years old and started a phase 2 program at 2 weeks post op. It has been an excellent experience!! He only now has started to do some free weights and arm/chest exercises.

Good luck and don't do too much too soon :)

Hi Eckw

Did you spend 20 days in the hospital post-op? Sounds like a rough go. Glad you are feeling better.

I had my surgery in the pits of winter, so I walked on the treadmill for my rehab. At about 4-5 weeks out, I would walk for an hour at 4mph (then go home and sleep for an hour). Once I got to 12 weeks or so, I started doing some light resistance training and swimming.

I think your plan sounds about right. Just don't do anything that hurts and you should be fine.

Best wishes for continued recovery.

Yes, I was in hospital for 20 days because my fever still lingering and they did several cultures and all results turn out negative. I felt fine dsepite being bored but I did a lot of walking in the hospital. The temperature finally came down to low 38. After a week back home my fever was back to normal. I had my eco done 2 weeks ago and they said everythings going well. I went back to the gym yesterday and did treadmill for 25 min. I will probably keep doing cardio only for a while and increase the length of time and intensity gradually.

I click submit by accident so now I continue with my message.

Thanks Bill for your advice. I felt exercising on treadmill is more intensive then walking for cardio, though I still be going out for walk if weather permit. in the gym it is a better environment for exercise.

Best wishes to you too.

Welcome to the site. I agree with the advice about cardiac rehab. To some degree this depends on how active you were before the surgery and your knowledge level - having someone who is proficient with cardiac rehab assisting you with goals etc. can be very helpful. A heart rate monitor is also a good device to know how hard you are working the heart.

Here's a link to a walking schedule which is designed to take a sedentary person from walking 15 minutes a day to 60 minutes over the three months. The plan may not be right for you but it demonstrates the principle of slowly increasing your activity level. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info. I can use it for my treadmill walking at the gym.
