I see you're now only one week out from your Endurance ride. How's the training coming and how are you feeling about the event? Wishing you well in the endeavor and anxious to hear about it when it's over.

Hi Kodi,
The training has gone exceedingly well. Friday was the end of my 15 days of killing myself, 20 rides and 5 runs. My time on the trail where the race is being held has gone from 1:25 per lap to 1:08 per lap. Today was a slow recovery ride, tomorrow will be some hill repeats, Tuesday base ride, Wednesday hill repeats, Thursday recovery ride and Friday will be off. I am expecting to do the first two laps at a 1:00 pace and the remaining 3 at 1:15 pace for a total of 60 miles and 6000 ft of elevation gain in 6 hours. Unfortunately I may not be able to race. I am registered and the training has gotten me where I want to be but my son has his first communion on Sunday and my parents are coming in on Friday. Since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary in June we will be taking them out Friday night. Time conspires against me.

Wow,you've been working hard. Do you think you are back to pre-surgery condition? Too bad about maybe not racing, but life does get in our way. I know it's a matter of priorities but we always have those decisions to face.

If you don't get to do this one, what's next?

I am actually in better shape then I have been in years. Two years ago I was riding the same course that the race is being held at. It took me 1:15 per lap with a one lap maximum. It was two miles shorter then it is now. I can now do a lap in 1:08 (should be able to go faster race day) and I routinely ride two or more laps. I believe the heart issues were affecting my performance for much longer then I thought.

I am not sure which race I will do next. There are plenty of choices but I had really liked this course due to the homefield advantage. I have two 24 hour races toward the end of the summer that I may do as part of a team but the course for one of them is brutal and I still have problems getting a full lap in. I fade quickly when my HR gets to about 160 and that trail has lots of steep hills that push the HR up.

On the good side though my HR drops like a rock when I get a chance to spin. I haven't experienced this in a long time, pre surgery my HR would take hours to come back down and sometimes it would stay elevated for a day after a decent workout.

Well david it is great to see what you have done!!!!! I look forward to your race report if the universe doesn't conspire against you. Good luck!

Unfortunately the universe did conspire against me. My parents did not arrive until midnight the day before the race and my little one decided to spike a fever with the occasional expulsion of partially digested foods. The wife made it quite clear that I would become very familiar with the guest suite if I decided to do the race. Oh well, there is always the next one. Anyone in Georgia feel like doing the muddy buddy race with me in June at the GIHP in Conyers?

And just to share, we have been doing lots of family rides since I got a trail a bike for my little one, I put up a post about the most recent ride. Don't worry, there are no pop ups or anything with the site.
