Sounds familier

Yaps,
I also was at 1.7 last week, that is scary stuff.
I got my own results from the lab, since it was late Friday and everybody was already gone.
Hopefully with my experience and certainly advice from Al, tommorows test will be better after the adjustment I made.
A few months ago, my wife's sister saw her INR drop to 1.4.
Before she could do anything she suffered a major stroke.
That really got my attention!

Yaps, am I correct in assuming that you were told to eat salads last week but your dose wasn't changed in any way?

My thought is that one of the tests was bogus. If I draw a 1.7 I always retest to double check. I wish labs would do that too. When you're talking about something as serious as INR, it's better to double check results if there's been a big change from recent #'s.

Do you do your own dosing, or are you told what to take. Make sure your increase to bump the 1.7 is at least a 10% change from your last weekly dose.

I do my checks at cardio office... and it was high the week before, but Ive also been switching between warfarin and coumadin, as the pharmacy didnt have enough warfarin... yikes!!

What is the difference between warfarin and coudamin? I thought the latter was just a trade name rather than the generic name. When I checked my copy of the BNF coudamin doesn't get a mention at all.

Coumadin is the original and patented version. Warfarin is the generic and is made by at least three manufacturers. Most of us who have tried both will tell you they are interchangable and produce identical results.

One of the rare things that Chris and I agree on. LOL.

I was just thinking about this morning, Chris. Hope you are doing well.

Just got my test back: 1.9!

Just got my test back: 1.9!

Noted the booze above. Are there any other recommended things I can eat/drink/take to increase?
Doc said to take 1.5 tablets a day instead of every other day.
Thanks

Baradonai,

Sounds like a strange increase to me. Increasing dosage to 1.5 tablets every day compared to 1 tablet every other day is a 260% increase (4 pills over 7 days versus 10.5 pills over the same period). Except for a change needed for dangerously high INR, the changes needed to account for the metabolism of the drug and clotting products produced is between 10-20% per week. Sounds to me that with an initial inadequate dosage every other day that your doctor is off in the wrong direction. He is trying to kill you with either too little, or too much. The time has come for you to learn all you can about Coumadin.

Just about everything that you eat or drink (except alcohol) will lower the INR. It is not eating that raises the INR.

I agree with Dr. Allen, if your doctor just had a monkey throw darts at a board with random numbers on it, you would probably would get more rational dosage changes.

I guess I wasn't too clear

<newbie>
From my calculations, my pcp raised my level 16.5% and is checking me again in 6 days. That would be a reasonable adjustment from the literature I've seen thus far.

Thanks guys for your replies.
