I went to the cardio yesterday and he said everything sounds great. He did an EKG and it was fine. I asked if he was going to have me get an echo and he said no. He feels the one I had in 08 is good enough. He said they worry about a leak and he could hear that if it happens and I would have trouble breathing. I am just uncomfortable without a yearly echo. How often does everyone get an echo??? Yearly??? Every 2 years??

Hi Deb,

I am happpy to hear the good news. I am not sure how often my cardio will request echos for me from now on...the last one was five months ago, but I will insist on a yearly echo.:)

For a long time I had them every two years. Then I switched doctors and maybe there were more changes (not sure) and I went to every year.

I just noticed you got a new valve in '07. Is there any leakage at all? Maybe he figures you don't need it because it's new?

My cardio said I only need one every 2nd year. I'm ok with that because he also said if I or my GP have any worries in between times to get straight in touch and he'd see me and arrange to get an echo done.

I have one yearly and an ECG at the same time, both shortly before my regular visit to my cardiologist. He arranged it and since we don't pay here when you are a public patient it isn't a case of just wanting to collect a fee.

I have a yearly echo and ultrasound done. Unless there is a reason to need one every year, every other year is fine.

You would not be out of line to ask for another echo at 2 years after your last one. Call a couple of months in advance to set it up. I gather that would be sometime this year.

And if you have any symptoms or other concerns, that is reason to ask to be seen (and evaluated).

I guess every other year is ok. Just worries me. I was not looking forward to the expense so I will wait. I will go to him next January since the valve is only 2 1/2 years old. Should keep tickin without problems:eek:

I was having echos every six months while my cardio watched my valve and then in the stretch just before he said it was time for surgery, I had echos at three months.

I've had a yearly echo since my AVR/aneurysm repair in '99. I don't mind it at all - it's such an easy test.

Cheers,
Michelle
