Hi, all--
Got a question for you, and it's probably stupid, all things considered. One of my closest and dearest friends is finally getting married this summer and she's asked me to be her matron of honor. That's not the problem. The thing is, she is very particular about all us attendants looking uniform: same dress, same hairstyle, same shoes. She wants us all to have french-tip manicures. My nails are awful--I love to bite them and I am considering getting acrylics for the event.

The concern is this--my mother thinks I shouldn't in case the manicurist cuts me. At my cardiologist appointment in December, my doctor warned against cuts. Said to call and get antibiotics, if, say, I cut myself while preparing dinner. (Background: I have congenital MVP as a result of a heart attack. Had a TEE in April; Doctor says that although there is "some" leakage and "minor" thickening of the valve, I won't need replacement for 10-20 years, approximately.)

Up 'til then I had only been concerned with pre-medicating before my dentist appts. I've had acrylic nails before (my wedding, special events, boredom) with no problems...so... is it a good idea to get the acrylic nails? BTW--I'd call my doctor and ask him myself, but he's away for a couple months.
Thanks for any answers you can give me...
Debbie

Debbie,

No question is dumb when it comes to your health. As a nurse, I don't see any problem with the "acrylic" thing......althought I had them once and couldn't pick up a thing for the week or two they were on my nails. :) However, considering your worry, might I suggest you call your doctor's office and request to speak with his nurse about your concerns. Getting a go-ahead from there might make you feel better. The best manicurists want to be informed about such things and will be honest about the process once they have all the information about your concerns.

We only live once and in this one lifetime here we should be able to enjoy long, beautiful nails at least once or twice......don't ya think?

Debbie,

I have had acrylic nails twice during the last 10 years, once for about 2 years and the last for about 1 year. I had no problems with them. I had them removed before I moved back to Ohio last year because I couldn't do all the packing and moving and worry about nails.

I always made sure to remind the manicurist to be very careful with files and the like. The skin around my fingers is very thin and it is easy to cut. Making sure they take the time to avoid filing your skin is very helpful in preventing infections.

Also, make sure you go to a reputable salon. As long as they take the care to prevent infection, you should be fine. I see no reason why you should need antibiotics unless they really tear up your hands and then you need a lawyer too.

Thanks, ladies, for the replies. I think I will go back to the salon where I had my nails done last time. The manicurist there is very gentle and takes her time.

what is a french tip manicure????

Just wondering.

Marsha,

It is where the majority of the nail is painted a light color (pink, beige, or left clear) and the tip of the nail is painted white.

Gina:
Thanks for the enlightenment.

Other than trimming my nails, I don't do anything to mine.... Used to love painting mine -- only to enjoy stripping the polish off. Much cheaper not to do my nails. :D

Hi Deb, any question is never dumb. You posed a question I never thought of. I did get cut on a file from a manicure and didn't even think about it. Next time I'll be more careful.

I love the look of french tip on the nails. My daughter loves it on her toes and they do look cute. You can always take off it if you don't like it. Maybe we should keep neosporin in our car/purse just in case, if that would help.

enjoy the wedding.
