Just a bit of humor, to what was a horrific experience.

On Monday evening, our daughter, her husband, and their two daughters, age 4 mos and 2-1/2 years came over for a quick BBQ.

I had a hankering for hot dogs. Onto the grill they went. Sat down, started to eat, and my son-in-law started choking..............badly. Could NOT breath. My husband did the Heimlich on him.....three times, while I am on the phone with the Police Department. It was a horrid experience. The third time, it worked. Praise God. I've three comments:

1. God has a plan for everything. My husband was saved by his surgeon, so that he could save my son-in-law.

2. IF SOMEONE NEEDS TO HAVE THE HEIMLICH DONE ON THEM, DO NOT WAIT TO CALL 911. It was obvious to me, that even if they came immediately, (5 minutes away), if the Heimlich hadn't worked, he wouldnt be alive today. I will, if EVER, in this position again, call the Police immediately...regardless of the embarassment it might cause the victim.

3. Chew your food well. Do not talk while you eat.

Ok....one more. Be ready, as you never know when you are going to permanently change your address. Make certain you are prepared to go home. - Marybeth

How frightening! I'm so glad your husband acted so quickly. So now your son-in-law is doubly grateful for your husband's surgery.

I would also like to add "Don't let young children eat uncooked marshmellows." Our daughter almost choked to death on one when she was 3. My husband put her over his knee and did the child's Heimlich on her and it worked. A few weeks later another small child in our town died while choking on a marshmellow. And the Heimlich was done on her. The problem is that the wet, sticky marshmellow creates a solid block in the throat and is very hard to dislodge. Often times what happens is that the marshmellow is dislodged, but the frightened child begins to cry, which sucks it back into the throat even further.
