For our Aussie members and also for cat lovers:

Here is a photo (i.e., if I've done it right!) of a Maine Coon Cat that I showed last year. He flew to Australia in early June & is sitting in quarantine in Australia. Should get sprung about July 10, I think. He's heading to a new home in New South Wales, where he will be shown.

His name is Grand Champion Nascat Race4thechase of Zapzkatz. He's a cameo tabby & white. His breeder is a NASCAR fan, so she named her cattery Nascat and names all her cats for something to do with racing. "Chaser's" littermate brother was shown as a neuter; his name is Rusty Wallace. He now lives in the Phoenix, Arizona, area.

What a handsome boy!!! I'm sure he'll have a great home, it's just the quarantine that's a pain. I think if we ever purchased any cat at all it would be a Maine Coon Cat......Of course, we ususally get strays, throw aways, hawk bait, and ferals that we spay and neuter and they 're taken care of till they cross the bridge; usually at very ripe old ages. My neighbor calls our barn the "cat cafeteria" as we always have crunchies down for them.

Right now we only have one of our own.....well, we're his own, who is 16 and travels with us and the dogs in the motor home....Scooter is our only indoor/outdoor cat, while Bugs and Bunny are the last two feral cats our neighborhood takes care of.....Of course, they sleep in our barn and burrow down in the horse blankets, but no one can touch them.

I should have mentioned that Chaser is a HUGE Maine Coon Cat -- not fat, just a large cat. He was about 12 pounds @ 8 months and about 14-16 pounds @ 10 months. His breeder thinks he will be 22 pounds when he's fully grown, around 4 years of age.

I would think that any dog lover would love Maine Coon Cats. They're very un-catlike!

Hi Catwoman

You're right. We have a friend who has a MCC.....he's such a sweetie.....not at all catlike, much more like a spaniel, JMHO. Well, if we ever decided to get one, I hope you'll be able to hook us up with a good breeder, yes?

Mr Bigglesworth!

Mr Bigglesworth!

Wow! 22 lbs!!And I thought my ocicat was large at 16lbs.
That mcc is a beauty. Does the breed require lots of brushing? Is major shedding a problem? My ocicat, who only has one functioning kidney due to a stone that rendered the other one nonfunctioning, now is in kidney failure, poor guy. He is down to 10lbs and wants to eat many food items that he wouldn't touch before, when he was fat and picky. His belly has disappeared, but he is hanging in there. His symptoms began in Dec, gave him the homeopathic drops, and now he pees alot, but doesn't drink the huge amts of h2o that he was drinking. I know he doesn't have much time, so I give him lots of good muscle meat and time outside to watch the birdies.
He is only 8yrs old, too young for such a problem. I try not to be sad.

Gail:

I am so sorry about your ailing Ocicat. Yeah, 10 pounds is kinda light for an Oci.
We lost an Aby in January 1996 to kidney disease. Gave him fluids & meds at home, vet checked his BUN/creatinine/hematocrit & gave him Epogen as needed to boost red blood cells. We tried to keep him on Hill's Rx K/D, but apparently it's not the tastiest food in the world. So we let him eat whatever he would eat. Did this for 2 years.
Ramses was one of my all-time favorite cats -- a dog in a blue Abyssinian coat. Walked on a leash & harness, walked without being on a leash & harness, understood commands, was not distressed sitting next to Dobies, Chows, etc., at the vet clinic.

Thanks, Catwoman.....

It's the same in the dog world, we all know breeders who we would send people to and we also know the ones to stay away from. I just might take you up on that offer down the road!!!! Right now we're dealing with my Scooter cat 16+ who is at the beginning of renal problems. We subcu him twice a week with Ringers .....such an awesome cat, he doesn't even mind the needle when I put it in his neck. He does look like a fullback for a few hours after, though......
