What are you finding about dogs visiting patients in hospitals?

I just contacted UCLA and they say only service dogs, not service dogs in training and no certified therapy dogs. We have a guide dog in training who has been in our local hospital (not allowed in ICU or Labor/Delivery). We also have 3 certified therapy dogs who are allowed in acute care in the hospitals in this county. Our daughter had requested that one of our dogs visit her while she is in the hospital.

One of our guide dogs in training has always accompanied our daughter to her cardio appointments at UCLA med center (not the hospital) and was welcomed by nurses and doctors.

When Joe was in the Intensive Care Unit at a large teaching hospital, there was a therapy dog visiting the patients.

UCLA says NO dogs other than service dogs with their partner -- no service dogs in training and no therapy dogs.

No dogs

No dogs

If they didn't say NO to dogs, where would it end? Next comes the cat, then the parokeet, python, etc., etc. No thanks. If I'm recovering, I don't want an animal barking or howling or whining in the next room. Sorry, but that is the way it is. And I an a cat lover, but wouldn't want my pet in the hopsital.

Each hospital has their rules. I have a Greyhound (that's where my name Maxximom comes from) that is a Certified Pet Therapist and the hospitals down here in Raleigh vary in their approaches to having these dogs visit in the hospitals. This I do know.. they will not let a "pet" visit. When I had my AVR 2 years ago I would have loved to have Maxx visit me at Duke..but I didn't even ask:( I knew what the answer would be.
