I'm on Accupril (ace inhibitor) 10 mg per day. I take it at about 10:00pm before I go to bed.

I notice that sometimes I get a bad cough, like I'm congested, for a couple of minutes when I lay down.

Is this from the medicine, cause I've read that it can cause a cough, or is it from my leaky valve????

I'm guessing its the medicine....

Thanks for the imput.!!!!

Kevin, have they ever told you that you are in CHF? I remember I used to have a really bad cough, and could not lay down at all. I had to sleep sitting up on our couch for a month until we figured out what was wrong with me. Then we found out about my heart, but by then I was pretty far into chf, and had pulmonary edema and all that fun stuff. I would call your cardiologist about it, seriously. I personally have no experience with accupril, I am on metoprolol, a beta blocker. Good luck!

I have been told that my lv is a little enlarged from the valve leaking but not anything about chf. I don't feel any fatigue or anything like that.

I had the cough when I first started the medicine, on 5mg and he recently upped my dose to 10mg so I think that is what it is from...

I'll call the cardio but I never get him only the nurse's voice mail....

Hi Kevin,

Yes, Ace Inhibitors and Beta Blockers can cause a dry cough.

What side effects can this medication cause?
Although side effects from quinapril are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

headache
dizziness or lightheadedness
excessive tiredness
diarrhea
upset stomach
cough
sore throat
fever
unusual bruising

You may want to look at this site for more detail information.

Also, You may want to ask your doctor about taking your medicine in the morning since it is a blood pressure medicine, you want it's full effect to help you during your day time activities when your blood pressure is more likely to fluxuate.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hi Kevin,

One of my symptoms was that when I would lay down, I'd start coughing, choking, and gasping for air. The only way I could make it go away was to sit up for a while. I was not on any medicine at that time so I know why it was happening. Also, my cough wasn't dry, even though I would never expel any phlegm, (sorry, gross) it felt like I had to.

Do you find yours will go away when you sit up?

Yes

Yes

I used to cough while laying down before my surgery. You could also hear kind of a wheezing sound when I exhaled. I would sit bolt upright in a panic sometimes in the middle of the night because I couldn't breathe.

I used to have a cough from a BP medicine, I think it was Zestril. I wasn't just when I lay down, it was all the time and nearly drove me nuts.

Actually, my family now tells me I used to cough a lot all the time. Doc told me it was from my stenotic valves. I don't cough anymore.

I don't cough every night. I'm not sure if it is from my heart, medicine, or from allergies.

I agree, the cough is not real dry, it feels like there is something in my lungs but nothing comes out.

I'll try to tell the Dr., or leave another message on their voice mail that they won't return.

I have a echo scheduled in May so I should know if I am getting worse or better soon.

I might switch to mornings on the medicine also...

Is there any way you can get an appointment with your primary doctor? They might be able to help you too. Not with the complicated heart stuff, but with questions about it. I would try that if you can't get in to your cardio. It only took me a month to deteriorate to the point where I had to be intubated, and I don't want that to happen to you.
