I remember reading here a while back that following OHS, one should wait six months before dental procedures, ex removing wisdom teeth, etc. So what I want to know is, do I need to wait six months before any kind of medical/dental procedure, such as a teeth cleaning, and minor scar revisions (from a different surgery)???
Thanks- I wouldnt have even thought to ask if it wasnt for this site.

Although the guideline is a six month wait before having any dental procedure done, I had a dental cleaning at 4 months post-op and was fine. I had started grinding my teeth shortly before my surgery, and after the surgery I was not wearing my nightguard as I should have. That, and not flossing, led to a nasty case of gingivitis and I needed a cleaning 4 months out. My cardio prescribed the same amount of antibiotic as he did before I had my surgery.

I wouldn't recommend having any dental procedure in the first 6 months after surgery unless it's absolutely necessary. If you do, make sure your dentist and cardio are on the same page and do what they need to make sure you're protected. I remember having my cardio fill out some paperwork for my dentist before we went ahead with the cleaning.

i have been trying to hold off going to to dentist with adam, we are 41/2 months out now, trying to wait the 6 months. i keep changing the appts. and watching the tooth. it looks ok, we are thinking about getting an xray this week, just to make sure it is ok. adrianne said we dont have to take the antibiotics just for an xray. did anyone else on here ever take antibiotics just for an xray? i get so upset over all of this, if not for you guys, i wouldnt have known about the 6 monts either. no one bothered to tell me either. thanks....

What about non-dental?

What about non-dental?

What about non-dental procedures- like minor skin procedures- ?

No meds needed for an X-ray.

Bina, no, unfortunately I am not talking about piercings.
I have a call into the cardio about both.
Thanks, this is where I got the six month info, so thought I would check on what exactly that included.

Alpha 1....you only have to premedicate when the dentist is going to do invasive procedures, scraping, drilling etc. Don't get to uptite, I went 20 years before a dentist told me it was necessary to take anti-biotics.

Premedicate for any Invasive Procedure

Premedicate for any Invasive Procedure

Dental or otherwise.

So far, I've done it for dental checkups, a colonoscopy (routine), and a minor cyst removal by a plastic surgeon.

The gastroenterologist who did the colonoscopy told me to post-medicate as well. My cardio said he had not heard of that but didn't see how it sould do any harm so I went ahead and did that too. Gut bacteria can be pretty nasty.

The plastic surgeon told me he didn't think it was necessary for the cyst removal since surface bacteria are fairly benign but I took the meds anyway. He had no objection - just did not think it was needed.
