 How good should I feel by now at 5 weeks post-op? I seem to be going backwards! I am back to sleeping in recliner half the time because I cannot breathe when lying down. Evenings seem to be the worst time for me, I just can't get my breath.

I had caught uppper respiratory infect, went to doctor (primary care physician) who put me on antiobiotic and drug called Bextra because maybe have inflammation around heart. Felt ok maybe two days since last Thursday. I have even been wheezing. Is this a usual thing when getting cold after surgery? Have not had energy to take walks and do breathing exercises. I feel really discouraged. My cardio has a stress test scheduled for me tomorrow and then hopefully cardiac rehab. I am afraid my performance on the treadmill will be poor, and then what?

I'm so sorry for you

I'm so sorry for you

Five weeks out isn't very far, and further insult to your poor heart comes at some expense. I've been lucky - also staying away from anyone with so much as a sniffle. I'm glad you're seeing your cardiologist. My guess is that you have fluid in your lungs and they'll remove it. This happened to a gal I was in cardiac rehab with - she got a cold about a month after surgery and couldn't shake the fluid. Once it was removed, she was a new person. Bounced back immediately. In her case, they numbed her up and removed it with a needle in the office - she said the thought of it was scarier than the procedure.

You'll be OK - and everyone who's been through this has the right to be discouraged when there are any setbacks. Let us know what they find after your appointment.

I'm rooting for you, and I'm really sure that it'll be OK.

Hi Penny-

If you have a little fluid accumulation, the cardiologist will probably give you some diuretics to clear it out. Joe has had a thoracentesis (fluid removal with a needle) but that was because it couldn't be cleared out with diuretics, and he was in very bad shape. It doesn't sound like you're in that bad shape yet. They prefer to do the easiest and least invasive things first. And there are many diuretics that can be used from very mild to "WHOA, get outta my way!", and in the hospital, there are even more powerful ones that require a catheter they are so strong. Also, if you have any infection, they probably won't be going into your lungs invasively. I'm sure they will use diuretics first for quite a while before doing that.

If you haven't been finally discharged from your surgeon yet, you can call him/her and ask their advice also. It's very good that you are seeing the cardiologist. Do not hold back on what you tell him. Every symptom means something. If you can't sleep without several pillows to prop you up, that means something. If you are waking up gasping for air, that also means something. If you can't do anything without getting short of breath and find yourself fatigued and sleepy, make sure you note that also. As a matter of fact, write everything down so you don't forget what to say. If you can, have someone else go with you, because if you aren't feeling well, and are nervous about this, you could easily forget what is said.

I'm sure they want to be sure that this fluid situation clears up and that there isn't something else going on.

My guess is that in a week or two, this will all be on cleared up and you will be feeling much better.

Keep in touch and let us know how things are going.

If you get very short of breath before you have the card. appt., please get yourself to the ER with all due speed. Let others know that you are not feeling well, so they can keep tabs on you. But don't hesitate to get yourself the help that you need.

This is something that can be cleared up by the docs.

My husband has had many, many, many bouts with fluid retention, some mild, and some very serious. He's still here and so will you be.

Take care.

hi penny!
i'm so sorry you have to go through this... must be so discouraging to you. we all hope recovery will be a breeze.
nancy and georgia really summed this all up perfectly. most likely, the cardio will give you some diuretic to help eliminate some of the fluid.
five weeks into recovery is also very new though. please try and be patient and give it some time.
please let us know what happens and what the doc says.
be well, sylvia

How'd things go?

How'd things go?

Hi, Penny - I've been wondering how things have been going for you? Did you see the cardiologist yesterday? Hope you got good news.

Just wanted you to know that we're thinking of you - that second month out after surgery can be kindof difficult at times, so don't forget that we're here to talk.

:( Thank you for checking up on me! Well, my recliner and I are becoming really good friends! I have been having a 'pity party" the last day or so because of the news I got on Wednesday. My cardiac rehab is postponed and I feel like I have taken 3 steps back in my recovery. Went to cardio for stress test and was told I look like s--t right off the bat! He is very open and a good communicator, that is one thing I like about him, plus he cares for his patients! So, I had no stress test, but had blood tests and echo. I have fluid around my heart, that's the shortness of breath plus my blood test was not good. Anemic. I am off coumidan and on a Medrol Pak and the other anti-inflammatory, Bextra. I go back next week for another echo and blood test which will determine the course of action to be taken. May have fluid aspirated and a couple of units of blood if things don't improve. My family is very supportive and I thank you all for all your encouragement and information. I WANT TO FEEL BETTER AND GET ON WITH MY LIFE! Can you guess that i am impatient????!!!

Hi Penny-

Good! I'm glad that you have an answer for feeling poorly. That means that you will soon be feeling well once the treatment kicks in. It sounds as if you have a wonderful cardiologist who will stay on top of things and that is a blessing.

Take care, Penny and keep us up to date with what is happening.

Glad you got some answers

Glad you got some answers

Hi, Penny - you know, none of us should have to put up with a single bit of negative news post-surgically; IT'S NOT FAIR.

That being said, Nancy, as usual, hit it right on the head - these are things that can be fixed; and, in the greater scheme of things, it appears the fix isn't so bad (well, it's not open heart surgery, is it?:D )

I am truly sorry you have to mess around anymore. Thanks for replying and letting us know what the results were.

And I hope you don't look like s*** for long.

Keep in touch.

hi penny!
i am so sorry to hear the impatient tone in your voice. please don't be discourage.
sometimes there are stumbling blocks in recovery. joey and others here have been through that. not everyone has a smooth and uneventful recovery...
as nancy and georgia have said, atleast you know what the problem is and now it can be rectified.
please try to be patient. once this bump in the road is behind you and you start to feel better, it will all be forward from there on.
wishing you all the best.
-sylvia

Hi I'm in the same boat

Hi I'm in the same boat

Sorry to hear about all your problems know that I have had the same...I was re-hospitalized after having been sent home and spent 12 days on iv's and dieretics too no breath lack of oxegin in my blood low low blood pressure and I also had the shock treatment done as I went into fibrilation(or what they call "Flutter). Then when I was a bit better they sent me off to a re-hab center for 3 weeks...it's almost 2 months now and I'm just starting to feel better. But when you do WOW how good it is I'm really enjoying my new heart and I know you will too as soon as you are feeling better. All my best and remember one day you will wake up and say I feel great!!!Hugs Shana23

Dear Penny your doctor seems to be on the right track and keeping up with you. When you are not well, the doctor is the place to go if you aren't getting better. Sounds like yours is sticking with you. After surgery, at first glance, my primary dr said "you look pale" and immediately wrote a rx for me, sent me off for blood tests and he was right on the money. Anemia. It is encouraging when we feel they are doing something to ease us. My prayers are for you to pick up and be able to get good use from your repaired self. God bless

Shana-

How nice to see you! All your friends here were worried about you. We'd all love to hear the whole story. how about making your own thread and give us all the details.

Welcome back, and glad the worst is over and you are finally feeling better.

Best wishes, and take care.
