A dear friend of mine needs to talk to someone who is on disability. Mendy is a wonderful young adult (29 - young in my book, anyway!) with congenital heart defects and has asthma, to boot. Mendy teaches first grade, but has been hospitalized four times this year due to heart-related issues (arrythmias and right-sided congestive heart failure - she goes in for an ablation next week) and her asthma. Her pulmonoligist (sp?) told her that she should easily qualify for disability, but is hesitant to do so. She is worried about losing her home - and her insurance - and becoming dependent on others, but she also knows that working full-time is taking a severe toll on her health...........and she, of course, is worried about her students.

Mendy would really like to talk to someone who is on disability. I know this is kind of personal, but if you would not mind talking to her and sharing your experience - good and bad, please PM or e-mail me so I can hook you guys up. Thank you so much. Hugs. J.

I can understand her worries. My mother lived on disability for a number of years. It was not much to live on and she was on medicare for insurance. It is not as easy nowadays to get on as it was for my mother, who got on in the early 1970's. She needs to the doctor's backup if working is taking a toll on her health. If she is making house payments, she might lose her house. As for insurance, it has changed in the last few years. My mother passed before the changes took places. Perhaps someone in passing could talk about the insurance part. It won't be like at work, it is expensive. Tell her good luck on gettin disability. I have a cousin who has mulitple heath issues herself and is trying to get on disability, but is living with her sister. Good luck.

Iam also 29 and on disability

Iam also 29 and on disability

Iam 29 and have been on disability for two years now ,if you all want to talk or ask questions please write a message. I can tell you one thing it was very hard for me to get disability i had to fight it for two years,it might be because of the state but I was very sick with alot of the same problems and I had no insurence and needed a pacemaker from the begining but the kept postponing it because I had nothing ,then I had 4 ablations before the finally ablated my natural pacemaker nodes and now I am 100% dependent on a pacemaker. I bet I could probaly share alot with you it seems that you might of had a similiar heart defect. I finally got disability after having to go to the highest judge and when I went for my hearing I was gravely ill and swelled up bad and the first things out of the judge was why has this taken so long, this young lady is very ill,it took 5 minutes he granted my disability and promised a check withen 4 weeks and it had to go back 2 years.
One thing I do reccomend that you do as soon as possible even if you think they might deny you ,you need to fill out the application and go through the paper work and get a date when you filed the sooner the better ,you see when you finally are granted your disability they have to go back to that day you applied even if you been denied over and over its called a protective date so please at least go and fill the paper work out even if you dont think your sick enough this will get your protective file date and then you will always have it,you can do it through social service ,your job or just call the soc security in your area and they will send you the papers, one other thing you are allowed to keep your house and land that you live on,but if you have extra you will have to sell it or put it in someone elses name, family ect. also they wont take away your cars or your bank accounts ,its more to do with the bigger stuff ,bonds ,deeds, land ect.
any question please feel free to ask I hope things will work out for you
