Has anyone ever experienced any problem swallowing food, feeling somewhat chocked, near the throat area??... I sometimes feel as if the food/drink passes real slow thru the throat area.. sometimes even swallowing saliva can be difficult.... I also tend of barb(?) often, may be because that helps clear it up... anyone experienced any such thing?.. any suggestions?

Hi Taranjit-

I'm sorry you are having these problems. It certainly is a bad feeling and scary.

Joe has had those problems. He hasn't had them since his mitral valve was repaired, and since his CHF and pulmonary hypertension are better controlled.

I'm not suggesting that you have the same problems, but I think you should call it to your cardiologist's attention on Monday.

I'll tell you what happened to Joe. Maybe you'll see some similarities.

His throat veins were distended and highly visible. I could see his pulse there. He had difficulty eating hard foods such as meats, apple pieces, etc. It was difficult to swallow, and he had choking spells many times. He did throw up several times, and I had to give him the Heimlich maneuver on quite a few occasions, because pieces of food got caught in his throat.

I believe all of this was caused by the neck vein distension from his CHF, and also his valve problems. He also has severe pulmonary hypertension and that just makes everything much worse.

His valve is corrected, his CHF is under control and so is his PH. So he hasn't had any of those problems in a long, long time.

Again, please call your cardiologist. He'll know what to look for. And keep a small record of when it happens, your observations, what you were doing at the time, and how you are feeling otherwise (shorness of breath, etc.)

I wish you well, and let us know how things go for you.

I do that every once in a while. I still haven't figured it out. It sure isn't any fun and if it lasts long enough, it plays with my mind. Scary, very scary!

It could be a hiatal hernia causing it. You probably want to get it checked so you will KNOW what's causing it and then you won't have to be scared when it does happen - and you will also know what to do about it. If it's hiatal hernia, probably medicine will help.
