Hi pricks!
Did my first test on Saturday with the nurse watching me...got the first strip on the first try with a good drop of blood!!! I called the reading (2.6) into the number I was given. Today I got a call from the dr's office, that they recieved my fax ( the phone call creates and sends a fax to them) and that now that I'm in range 2 times in a row, I can go to every two weeks!!!! YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

It's a wonderful thing to have control and not have to go to a lab every week,
Congratulations!

Civilians don't understand the joy that we Pricks get when we first get our machine home. It's the feeling that the ball and chain have been taken from around your ankle and you're free to frolic around.

A little hint: it's even easier if you get those little capillary blood collectors. You don't have to get that drop of blood hanging there. QAS will send them as a service perk. (I've never been charged for them.)

Hehehe, she said "Frolic Around."

Capillary tubes vs. direct blood drop

Capillary tubes vs. direct blood drop

I used capillary tubes for years and thought they were the way to go. However I have now gone to direct blood drop and find it easy and consistent. I also test Alice and direct blood drop is easier for her.

I didn't know that QAS carried these capillary blood collectors. I've always used the direct draw & drop but several times when doing this, I accidently touched the monitor area with my finger & I always worry if this has an affect on the INR number?? And I'm too cheap to use another test strip to retest!!

So from prick to another, thanks for the pointer Karylnn!! :D

and.....happy pricking Colleen!!! :p :)

Now I'm put to shame. ;) I used to find the hanging blood drop so easy. The last year I've gone to capillary tubes because I got tired of the drop falling and ringing the green lighted dot on my INRatio and having to milk out more blood to get it on the drop. My skill has decreased with age - not improved like yours. :D

Well see....that is exactly what happens to me sometimes & when I'm trying to milk more blood from my finger, I will inadvertently touch the dot which I hate to do because then I'm doubting whether I got a true test or not!!

I don't think accidentally touching the dot will blow the test. The testing goes on higher up inside the machine. It just needs to pull enough blood up there to test.

good news

.
congratulations colleen, you are now in control and you can test anytime you feel concern about your inr level.

do you folks stateside have a double meaning for "prick" like we do down
in kiwi land?

some folks down here would get the "pricker" if one started off a post or letter with the salutation "hello pricks", ha ha.

I guess I'm just paranoid about that because some years ago when the nurse came over to demonstrate & go over the testing with me, I accidently did just that --- touched the green dot & I thought she was going to have a cow (or small goat :D). She made me prick another finger & do it all over again because she said that I had probably contaminated or comprimised the test!
