Poorly written article

They seem to confuse surgery for blocked arteries with valve surgery. It is hard to know what to conclude from this.

my arteries were blocked. After a year of lung cancer of my dear Joe, his death was near; my dr put me on paxil. It helped trememdously and I was still taking it when I had my bypasses. As some of you know my brother is gravely ill and has been grave since mid-Feb. I have been apprehensive all this time, just sat around waiting for news, and finally just got SICK and then sicker. My dr, after 2-3 visits, has rxed an antidepressant - several weeks ago. I think yesterday it may have kicked in because I felt like going uptown for the first time in a very long time. I don't know if any of this had to do with my heart, but last dr visit a week ago, my heart beat was irregular and I could hardly stand - so maybe.

We have all know that depression and heart issues can go hand in hand.

I have been suffering depression for many many years. Do you have any good links or books on this topic so that I may read about it? I'd be very interested in it as I know my "talk" therapy is not really helping me, and I always knew my health matters were contributing to depression. :(

I appreciate anything you guys can share.

Sincerely,

LB

here is a site where there is a REAL EP cardiologist who has a forum where you can ask questions of him and he will answer you within a short time. He no longer is in active practice, is an author of books for other cardios, a consultant, speaker, etc. This will take you into the forum where you can read, then join to ask your question. He will not give medical advice but will give general information. I have been a member there for as long as I have been a member here. He has written in the forum about depression and heart disease. He also writes a weekly article on various heart related topics. I highly recommend him and I receive it via email every Monday. Here it is:

His name is Richard Fogoros, M.D. I think he participates in several other spots (like dr of the day or something like that).

p.s. here is this week's article. it's about bp advancements.

 Just my humble opinion but sounds like another great advertisement for Eli Lilly, Pfizer and GSK to add for their money making, Long QT risking, major withdrawal causing, (Ecstasy similar) anti-depressants. They are probably not making enough money with their approval to give them to all PMS women. The artery blocked statements must be a miss print, since the helpful drugs they are promoting have a side affect in some of causing high cholesterol and most of them cause weight gain. Guess it's obvious I won't be swallowing ADs with a recommendation to use them as a coping skill for handling heart valve surgery issues. :D

Depression

LadyBlue,

I've suffered depression all my life, even as a child. I was given Prozac after the birth of my son when I was 35 (I'm now 56). I still take an antipressant and will for the rest of my life. They have been a godsend in my life. I convinced that without them, my marriage would not have survived and my children wouldn't have grown up as healthy. They are one more tool to use in life. I didn't have much support from family and they enabled me to get through some very difficult years.

I'm convinced that depression is chemically based and hereditary. Talking CAN help once you get past the brain fog caused by the depression, but when your chemicals are all wonky, it won't do much. Do make an appointment with your PCP or a psychiatrist and talk to them about it. I believe there's a support group for depression here on WebMD. Depression is not good for your health either.

Hope this helped.
Barbara
