I wrote this in response to SAD NEWS / GOOD NEWS but when I hit the 'SUBMIT' key, the message had 'disappeared' so here is my response under a new thread.

I've had several dogs over the last 25 years. After one recent 'walk on' adoptee disappeared in search of my older dog / companion that was hit by the school bus, I've always brought home the remains of a departed pet for the others to 'sniff and see' before burying. They seem to understand and I don't see them looking / worrying about their departed companion.

They really do grieve for each other. We lost a chihuahua and its companion would not eat, just lay on the stairs waiting. We had to force feed something tasty. It took more than a week for her to start eating on her own. Two of our cats wash each other, then one suddenly attacks, the other one yells - the other cats in the house come running to see what's wrong. Even the dog comes to check it out.

When Puff got killed on New Years day, Sam was all screwed up. It took at least a month before she'd even start to eat right. She stayed close to us so badly, you'd of thought she was glued. She undoubtedly misses her brother.

At one time I had a very very old dog and a 6-8 month old pup. The old dog was getting very close to it being time to be put down when he fell asleep behind the wheels of my car and I inadvertently killed him by running him over. Thankfully it was a clean kill, and if he hadn't been so close to being put down anyway I would have been devastated.

I'd thought the bump was a piece of firewood since the pup is a maniacal stick-dog and more than once had left a piece of firewood behind my car. When I got out and saw to my dismay that I had just run over my best friend, the pup was right there by him. And her reaction? "Hey, got a stick?"

I was surprised. I was expecting her to react in some way to her compatriot's death.
