Is it safe to get a dental implant? I have had a St. Jude mitral valve implant for four years. My cardiologist doesn't see a reason not to have the procedure. Do any of you have dental implants?

Welcome MM

Welcome MM

What did your Cardiologist say about you staying on your coumadin during the procedure. And what does your Dentist think about staying on your Coumadin. I always take 4..500mg. of Amox..1 hour before my cleanings. And stay on regular does of coumadin. Just had one done 3 days ago. No bleeding.:) :) I go every 3 months to be sure my gums are good. But at my age 63..I'm sure down the road. I will need some type of dental procedures..like dentures:eek:  Hope I'm a good 20 years away from that..Maybe someone will answer your question soon.Bonnie..Welcome to our wonderful site.

I have had a few teeth crowned since my MVR. Not sure if that falls under an implant though? Make sure you have the proper antibiotics. As long as you are cleared by your cardio.....the dentist should have the up to date guidelines.

I am still in the waiting room but unbeknownst to me I have had rheumatic heart disease for many years. Many of my teeth are crowned and I have one dental implant.

I can vaguely recall being given antiobiotics AFTER a few procedures. The only one that I know I had them before as well was the implant. The endodontist said he wouldn't consider doing it any other way- and this was before I knew of any valvular problems. Except for the long wait after the extraction while waiting for bone to fill the space to ready it for the implantation, I didn't have any problems. It seems the whole process took close to a year. It didn't have any more bleeding than having any other tooth pulled. Remember though, I was not on coumadin so I don't know if this helps you or not.

Depends . . .

Depends . . .

on what kind of implant you're having done. The two big bleeders in dental work are extraction and peridontal scraping and repair. But I don't think anything else is of great concern in terms of bleeding (of course you need to be covered by antibiotic every time you walk into the dentist's office).

I've had LOTS of inlays and crowns, etc. and there's really little bleeding - cleaning brings on more bleeding than most other work.

Hi I am looking into a dental implant. I have a St Jude's Mechanical heart valve. Dentist and cardiologist say its ok with antibiotic coverage. Are there any of you who had one? It is just one molar.
