To me, the ironic part of this sidebar from our local paper is that I've driven the intersections MANY times ... and never once felt unsafe at them. Maybe because I'm used to them ... and I know how drivers are in those areas, so I am extra cautious....?

*shrugs*

STILL ... it would be very nice if they were corrected....

Anyone else encounter these type of intersections regularly?

Oh yeah. Every place has them. If people would learn to watch for others stupid actions, most accidents would never happen. Problem is, too many drivers are driving around distracted by something and just not paying attention to what they're doing.

If talking on a cell phone and driving were illegal here, I could have a field day writing tickets. Probably go through a couple of books of them with no problem. I sat and counted people the other day while sitting in McDonalds parking lot. 1 in 3 people with phones glued to their ears.

I'm with you, Ross. I always have this evil dream that I was able to invent a device that could turn a cell phone into a mini-waffle iron at full heat. THAT might convince people not to drive and talk on the %@$*( things.

Well, we don't need intersections in Houston to have danger. Any piece of concrete will do. We all perfect the one finger wave at a very early age.

I wish cell phone use while driving in Florida was illegal. Just because it is legal does not mean it is the right thing to do. The trouble is our politicians are gutlless it comes to going against certain lobbiiest groups.

I teach a basic driver improvement course part time. We discuss this issue in all of my classes. I ask the students the following question: Would you want your doctor to be using a cell phone while they are operating on you or performing some type of procedure? You are only one person. Of the answer is always no. They do not want the doctor to be distractedd. I then tell people why then do you do it when you are drving a car.

Cort,
I have been through most of those intersections myself many times and never noticed it being dangerous, maybe me driving downtown has me used to crazy drivers :D I am with everyone else, no one should use a cell phone while driving. I see that so much here, I sometimes wonder what would people do without them! It is illegal in downtown Chicago to use them while driving, which is good. We should go back to using a pay phone at the gas station if you really feel that urge to call someone while out driving! It even drives me crazy to see people talking on the cell phone in a store, I mean is it that important to always be talking to someone! I guess I am just old fashion ;)
I am a very defensive driver, especially on my motorcycle, when I see someone on the cell phone while riding, I stay away from that person! I was almost side swiped on my bike a couple years ago on the Elgin Ohare Expressway when a lady on a cell phone cut into my lane, when she saw me she just looked surprised, like where did I come from, thank God there was a shoulder there that I could use.
I even saw last year a motorcycle rider talking on a cell phone, while riding and turning a corner! Now that was really stupid!
You hear all the time in a motorcycle accident, "I never saw him", so I make myself known around cars as much as possible because so many people are not paying attention, especially in an intersection!

grandson was driving me home from Atlanta a couple weeks ago. a guy behind him was riding the tail of our suv. gson would speed up and then slow down but the guy wouldn't stop it. gson held up his right arm to signal the guy so he could see it through our back window and drop back. Suddenly gson sped up, pulled into right lane of heavy traffic, called the police because the guy had pulled out a revolver and pointed it at us! this was on an interstate in heavy traffic, all lanes, bumper to bumper nearly.

Unsafe Driving

Unsafe Driving

It's amazing that using a mobile without a handsfree doesn't constitute a driving offence. :(
There is plenty of it going on in Australia however most habitual offenders I have come across have been fined and lost demerit points off their licence.
The only thing more dangerous than talking on the mobile is texting (SMS) while driving , however from my observations this appears to be the preserve of <25 females.

The worst intersection in my city was just blocks from my house. I had to go through it almost every day. They modified it a few years back, and it is a little better, but I frequently drive half a mile to avoid it.

LOL! Well, glad to know I'm NOT alone in that, then. My goodness ... as I stated in the original post, I've NEVER felt "unsafe" at ANY of those intersections. Yes, they can be hard to maneuver, but if you're paying attention, careful, and don't do anything stupid, you're fine. Heck, I've survived :).

Oh my goodness, Ann. That is horrible. Just goes to show, you just never know these days :(.

Sad commentary on society, is it not?
