sorry- i will probably drive you all nuts with all my questions....:D what oral pain meds did you come home from the hospital on?.thanks! trish

Remember that everyone's different. [oops - I see that was already said while I was posting this..]

They had me on morphine and oxy-whatever for the week I was in the hospital. They sent me home with percoset (sp?) but I didn't end up needing to take any. I just took Extra-Strength Tylenol for a week to get through the spirometer exercises and after that the pain wasn't bad enough for me to want to continue taking pain meds.

tramadol

tramadol

I threw up every hour after I woke up from surgery. I didn't do well with the anesthesia this time and didn't do well with the pain meds either. The staff tried all the drugs they could come up with but they all made me sick to my stomach and knocked me out. When I left the hospital they were cutting up tylenol 3 and giving me it slowly to try to fight the nausea. When I got home my regular doctor put me on tramadol and it has worked wonders. My sternum didn't bother me but my back and shoulders were killing me. I could tolerate it during the day but had been up for 4 days straight and was desperate for sleep. There is a long lasting tramadol but that made me a zombie so I just got the regular so I could cut it up as needed. Once I took it a couple of nights I started to sleep and my muscles relaxed and the pain eased off and I didn't need the pills anymore. Hope this helps.

They sent me home with Vicodin and something to help me sleep, but I don't remember the name of that one. I used very little of either until Pericarditis hit. Then I used them both and more.

JodyC - Anesthesia and Morphine make me sick as well. Did they give you Phenergan with your pain meds? That usually solves the nausea problem for me.

They were kind enough to leave me on a pain pump the entire time I was in the hospital (8 days) which was fentanyl. I was sent home with oxycodone and demerol. They had written the script for the oxycodone when I told them I wasn't comfortable taking it because I am very allergic to codeine and vicodin, so they gave me a script for the demerol as well. I took it on my travel day home, but really didn't need it after that. Chest pain for me was none existent and the shoulder pain which was quite bad at times wasn't really helped by drugs anyway. I had 3 mesages the first week home which helped more.

Percocet was my friend for a few weeks at home. Tapered off by cutting pills. Got pericarditis a week out of the hospital so probably would have been off pain pills earlier.

I came home with Oxycocet (which I believe is similar to Percocet). As it is addictive, they wanted to wean me to Tylonol 3 asap and then ultimately to Tylonol ES, then nothing.

nausea

nausea

Lisa: I had a couple different drugs in my IV to fight the nausea but they didn't work at all the first night and only helped a little after that. I hope my second OHS in a couple weeks will go better now that I know what works.

I took percocet for a a couple of weeks. I seemed to need it to sleep. I don't sleep well on my back. I'm a side sleeper. Percocet is addictive so I had to be careful and wean myself off.

Dick's surgeon sent him home with only extra strength Tylenol- it was enough.

it's been a long time ago, but I think I had tylenol 3. It did the trick and before I was done with them, I was taking them as a sleep help til they ran out. You might think about a sleep aid when you are no longer in a lot of pain.

I took Percocet and needed it for two to three weeks after both of my OHS. My first week home each time, I used it about 3 times a day. The second week home I tapered it down and gradually tapered to only ES tylenol until nothing by about the end of week three or so. My nurses emphasized pain hinders healing and they consider pain management important.

I asked to switch to Fentanyl at the hospital, because it make you less dopey and often doesn't cause some of the other issues that morphine can (like "morphine constipation").

I went home on Ultram (tramadol). I still have most of them left. I just can't seem to have enough pain to justify them, and I don't know which street corner to sell them on.

Best wishes,
