Good Morning shiny happy people. :)

Wonder how many of you are sitting at your computer with coffee in hand?

I saw this on the foodnetwork last night and just had to share with my fellow bean heads. The first is the site link. Check out how cowboy coffee is made. The second link is the cowboy story. Reason I'm posting it is that it's a good short story and worth mention.

got mine and fixin to get another cup.

My mother used to make coffee that way when I was a small child and we lived in the back woods of Georgia. We had a wood (burning) stove and she kept the egg shells on the back of the stove to dry, later adding a couple to the coffee pot that was also on the hot stove. Course they didn't let us young'uns have any of the coffee, except when it was that time of year when we were required to take our annual castor oil dose. Till I grew into my twenties I couldn't drink coffee because it reminded me of castor oil. I bet Bonnie can relate!

I still marvel at some of the things they used to do. Some, I miss dearly, others, I will never miss.

I feel so left out. My cup has tea in it.

I LOVE the smell of coffee. Never been able to get used to the taste.

We enjoyed reading about Cowboy Coffee pardner. Yes, I am sitting here with my cup of Joe in hand (Starbuck's Verona...freshly ground at home). Happy rustling!

Neat Story Ross.....

Neat Story Ross.....

It's strange...my mother can drink black coffee all day and the stronger the better...me, I have never been able to drink black coffee, and it's rare when I have a cup of coffee anyway....when I do, I have 8 equal in it and a ton of 1/2 and 1/2....Great Story though....Harrybaby:D :D :D

Hi Ross!

I'm three hours later than you here on the West Coast, and running a little late today anyway, but I'm sitting here with my coffee cup now empty, waiting for a refill when my husband trots into the kitchen. (I'm being a prima donna today because he said I have to because I overdid the hysterectomy recovery thing a bit a couple of days ago and I have to get better because my son gets married in two weeks:)!)

I LOVE a good strong cup of hot black coffee! Or two! But the first couple of sips each morning are the best!

I didn't read your stories yet. I wanted to post and now I'm going back to click on the links. Ah, now my mug is refilled. Yum!

Have a good day, Ross;).

The Best Part

The Best Part

Ross, You got me too, although I'm actually coming back to reply hours later. Coffee is something of a passion, as well as addiction for me. My grandfather used to bring my grandmother tea in bed before she got up for breakfast. We're not talking a mug or cup, but a tray with the tea set on it. He would then go down and make breakfast, and put the coffee on to perk on the stove. The fragrance was what hooked me. There is nothing else like it! I make mine in a small french presss pot. It doesn't fill the kitchen with that wonderful aroma the way perking does, but the coffee tastes great. Brian

Ross -

Very interesting about the eggshells and the calcium. Does anyone know if that's true? I'd be willing to try it!

The other story brought tears to my eyes. Reminded me of my late Granddaddies...

(edit - Brian, I got one of those French Press Pots too and it makes such hearty and excellent coffee, doesn't it!)

My kids scout leaders made a version of that coffee, but simply dropped the grounds with a cup of cold water. Three cups of "camp coffee" and I was awake for a week with a huge headache. Ah....those were the days.

You're all pretty lucky that you can drink coffee. I love the stuff, but I am restricted to minimal amounts of decaf. I am supposed to avoid the large doses of caffeine because I get palpitations. I thought this was a typical symptom with mitral valve issues. See, I'm still learning.

Happy New Years, everybody.

I was a Camp Fire leader for 10+ years and took several outdoor courses for leaders. We probably made it for ourselves, but certainly not for the kids. ;)

I have many outdoor cookbooks that have a cowboy coffee recipe. I would imagine that the calcium in the eggshells negates some of the acidity of the coffee.

Oh, yes, Ann .Castor Oil....with fresh squeeze orange juice.:( that was the only meds I remember Mama giving us......and horrible tasting....I have 1 cup of coffee/cream in the mornings..but hubby drinks it black all day..and even has a cup before he comes to bed..with something sweet..As soon as his head hits the pillow.he is asleep.. ......My M/I/law was from Sweden and said, all European children drank coffee...she also loved it..I drink water with my meals...anything else at my age makes me want to go to potty.:p Bonnie

Marsha, sorry if I wasn't clear:confused: ........you'd need a prescription to cerve coffee that strong to kids. In scouts the kids didn't do coffee at all.

Oh man, if I'd of let any of my kids (Scouts-I was silly enough to become a leader) have coffee, I'd of killed a few them before a weekend was over.
