I am sure this has been addressed before, but I finally am going on the generic due to the costs of the coumadin. Should I be doing anything different or just take the same as before? Did anyone see a big difference in their protimes? Should I call the Coumadin Clinic to see if I should get tested earlier? The Cardiologist was hesitant to do this but he did it anyway. Thanks,

Sorry, I can't help you. I have always taken generic (warfarin) 5mg/day. I never had a problem and my cardio and Primary don't have a problem with the use of warfarin.

This has been a frequent topic on this Forum.

Bottom Line: Almost Everyone who has switched from Coumadin to generic Warfarin has seen NO DIFFERENCE.

One owner of the Coumadin Brand Name (there have been several) liked to promote the idea that their product was Better, more tightly controlled, yada yada yada, UNTIL they LOST a LAWSUIT when it was shown that at least one generic manufacturer had tighter controls than the (then) manufacturer of Coumadin.

Two of the better known generic manufacturers are TARO (in Israel) and BARR (in the USA). I have used BOTH with NO PROBLEMS.

I was on Coumadin for 38 years before I finally convinced a young cardio to let me try warfarin. Been on warfarin (Barr) for two years. Have seen no change in bleed times, bruising or any other health issue. My INR readings with either drug continue to run in range (most of the time). As was said earlier, it is a lot less expensive !

Thanks to all for your answers. My Pharmacy uses Barr so it looks like this is the better one.

In the UK, it's not even an option - generics are the standard. I guess you could pay for it yourself if you really want a brand name, but our government gives us the generics as part of our national health service. Never heard anyone suggest there's the slightest difference in effectiveness.
