I posted a recent thread about a diagnosed stroke I had recently. I will probably be prescribed Coumadin. I know there are others out there who take it and I'm wondering about the restrictions and side effects of taking it. I know I have to watch being cut because of potential excessive bleeding. What about playing ice hockey? Do I have to give it up? And what about other lifestyle changes? Thanks for your input.

Living with Coumadin is pretty straightforward IF you have the CORRECT information. Unfortunately there are a lot of 'horror stories' from days of olde (before INR testing revolutionized monitoring / control around 1990).

I recommend that you browse through the Anti-Coagulation Forum (there should be some "sticky" posts with basic information and guidelines at the top of the list).

One of the BEST places to learn about Coumadin is on AL Lodwick's website www.warfarinfo.com AL is a certified A-C provider who runs his own A-C Clinic in Pueblo, CO, has authored a Book on the subject (Have you had your Rat Poison Today?), and is an well known consultant and advisor.

The usual recommendations are to avoid CONTACT sports. Minor Cuts just take Pressure and Time to heal. MAJOR Cuts can be a problem. Cutting an artery would be Bad News.

Good advice so far. You may also want to check out the Active Lifestyles forum to read what some of our warfarin users are doing athletically.
