Does Coumadin affect blood pressure? I take Blood pressure meds now and was wondering if those will be stoped if I end up on coumadin.

I have the possibility of valve replacement surgery in August altho the surgon said he would try repair but I suspect it will be a replacement since the heart experts keep using the word "severe" when taking about the amount of regurgitation my valve has :p .

Any info would be greatly appriciated!

The coumadin won't affect the blood pressure, but if you do wind up having the regurgitation repaired, there's a good chance the BP will be less of a problem (assuming no other hypertensive factors). When I had my MVR done, my BP went from 130-140/90's before to 100-110/75ish afterwards. Got off the BP pills, only to wind up taking the coumadin. Oh well...

I was on BP medication (cozaar, an ARB because I can't handle ACE inhibitors) before my surgery & I am still on it. I was on coumadin for three months after my surgery in Feb. 2004 and now I have just gone back on coumadin again (for atrial flutter), and I am still taking the cozaar as well as a beta blocker (coreg).

btw -- I wouldn't be so sure you won't get a repair! My mitral valve regurgitation was described "moderate to severe" by the invasive cardiologist, but when I asked my surgeon about that he chuckled and said, "These cardios just don't like to say 'severe.'" I got the idea. And he was able to do a repair anyway. So hang in there.

Well the word moderate has yet to be used :p but according to the Cardio Surgon I am just a baby (im 38) when it come to this kind of surgery so it should be just fine :D

I am only on a duretic and potassium because of the duretic (ah the slippery slope of medication)
