I am suprised I have not seen any postings on here yet about Coumadin and pregnancy...How does Coumadin and pregnancy work? I hear that if you are on Coumadin and want to have kids, you have to be on Lovanox throughout pregnancy, and that its a little more complicated than most pregnancies. I am not getting married or having kids anytime soon, but trying to get informed on what lies ahead for my future.

Thanks!

Danielle

You are right about coumadin and pregnancy not mixing. A pregnancy in a person with a mechanical valve needs to be carefully planned and anti-coagulation therapy with Lovenox begun. I think it is not really discussed here since it is so specialized that all advice really needs to come from a doctor that deals in high risk pregnancy. I don't know of any members here who have gone through pregnancy on Lovenox but it is possible.

Yes, you are right, prergnancy is possible for women on Coumadin, my doc never said that I could NOT have children, she just explained that it would be a high risk pregnancy. I really need to discuss this further with my doc. Why haven't I asked her earlier? I am 25, I should know what my situation is with having kids...I want to get married eventually, and of course the topic of kids will come up.

Thanks for your info bvdr!

I have already seen a high risk ob-gyn regarding pregnancy. The verdict was that I could definitely have a baby but that I would be on a heparin pump for the whole 9 months. The risks would be substantial bone density loss and blood clot formation during delivery. (when I would be taken off of the heparing for delivery) I'm sure that there are definitely more risks, but those are two of the main ones. My cardiologist was totally against it. In the end, my husband and I have decided against pregnancy for now. We are holding out hope that a new medication will be approved within the next ten years. We are also considering adoption.

Hi, Danielle,
Haven't heard from you in awhile, and your post caught my eye. I actually had a pregnancy shortly after my replacement. My cardio and ob put me in the hospital, got me regulated on heparin shots, and then two weeks later, I miscarried. This happened shortly before this site was established, and to say the least, I was terribly ignorant about the effects of coumadin on anything. All I knew were the basic facts I got from my doc and the lab tech drawing my blood. My cardio did make a series of phone calls to colleagues and researched this issue for me for several hours before putting me in the hospital, so I felt very well taken care of, but when I look back on it now, and knowing the risks of coumadin crossing the placenta, I just shutter, at least at my own ignorance. Anyway, I've since brought this up with my new ob (now living in a different town) who says it's possible but very difficult and must be carefully monitored by a high risk ob and a cardio. I agree with the other responses. Talk to your cardio and a high risk ob before attempting this. Since I've actually met you and had dinner with you, Danielle, I can tell you're a very rational person who's just doing her homework. Best of luck and nice hearing from you.

I had my surgery 4 years ago.At the time I wanted a porcine valve hoping to buy myself some time on the chance I'd still be able have children.Turns out the
doctor doing the sugery decided to give me a St. Judes vavle.Boy,did that boggle my mind.Anyways...I too was very ignorant about pregnancy and coumadin.I've a cardiologist who is against it and on oby/gyn who is confident I"d be while high risk, very do-able.This is a very personal choice to make.At this point though,I wouldn't dream of having kids.I mean for one...not dating anyone and two...I'm going to be 41 this year. It's been heart breaking to face BUT...once again...this forum and what people share here leaves me feeling so GOOD that I"m not alone.

Eloise,
Just wanted to say "welcome to the family"! As a person living with a heart valve issue, you won't be able to find any better support than right here. One of our best perks is our member Al Lodwick. He is a warfarin (Coumadin) expert with his own web site www.warfarinfo.com and having a mech valve, you will find you'll need his expert advise from time to time. Then we have Ross (or Ross has us?) He's our Father Confessor, Dirty Old Man, Adult Child, Computer Guru, Fuzzy Ol' Teddy Bear and Watch Dog all rolled into one. He's been known to send out the hounds in search of missing members.

I lived 12 years without knowing another soul that had valve surgery, then I found VR while doing a web search on a Coumadin issue. My life is now a brighter place and I know yours will be too.

I have a discussion about this on my website at http://www.warfarinfo.com/pregnancy.htm

Ten years is probably realistic before there will be a drug approved for use with mechanical heart valves. Even then there will probably be no studies about whether or not it is safe in pregnancy.

I have been watching Exanta for three years and it was just sent back to the drawing board. There is not another drug that is ready to be marketed withing the next 3 to 5 years that I am waware of.

Karlynnn!
Thank You for the warm welcome! I've only had my vavle 4 years,I can't (and can a little)imagine what it was like for you to go12 years not knowing anyone else who had a vavle.I look forward to getting to know people and feel such a relief to be able to post here. This has turned out to be a mightly fine day!

Is there any chance that you could come to our meeting in Denver Oct 14 to 16 and get to know people personally?

Karlynn why did you warn her about me? I mean I sit here reading what she's saying and you just know what I'm thinking don't ya? :D

"...not dating anyone and two...I'm going to be 41 this year." Now this is screaming with potential!

Ross, you have such a good sense of humor. Keep up the good work,

Eloise:

Right before my valve went noticeably south, a friend who also shows cats had MVR, bovine tissue, in Houston in Dec. 2002. Then I had mine in June 2003. Another friend who also shows cats had MVR (St. Jude) in July 2004; both Chris & I were able to give him lots of tips based on our experiences.

Now other friends are joking, saying they hope MVR isn't contagious!!! I just tell them we have a very very exclusive club but that membership IS open. :D :D

I'm so sorry. I won't say a word to the next new unsuspecting member. It will be kind of like watching those wild life films where the cheetah is sneaking up on a bunny rabbit.

Congratulations to the Supreme Whateveritisthatyouare! You finally have someone (out of ~1000 members) that may be wary of you. It's been hard work, but it looks like it may be paying off for you. But I'm guessing that she's about as wary of you as she is of Winnie The Pooh. :)
