Coumadin and Plavix

Does anyone have experience taking both at the same time for an extended period.

Taking an anti-coagulant along with an anti-platelet like Plavix would cause me to be extra cautious in avoiding falls and bleeds.
No running with scissors.
When I took Coumadin with low dose Aspirin, I had several minor nose bleeds.

I took Plavix and aspirin along with coumadin for about a year. After a nose bleed that landed me in the hospital I told the doctors no more. I had so very much bruising without ever bumping myself. I am risking the stents closing up but the risk is worth the side effects to me.

Herb, Plavix works by making platelets less "sticky". It is an artery thing. Most physicians hesitate to prescribe it along with warfarin which works to stop venous and mechanical valve thrombosis since it increases the chance of bleeding. If you have a history of artery thromboembolism and/or coronary artery disease you may have to take it. I would only add it to your warfarin after consulting a hematologist or other internist well versed in ACT.

I have taken pPavix before after coronary artery stent placement along with coumadin and low dose aspirin. I had no problem except when I had a leg injury which caused excessive internal bleeding requiring blood transfusions, but that could have happened with coumadin alone.

My present problem deals with stenosis of my cartorid artery. Surgery would be a high rish for me and Plavix with Coumadin may be the only alternate solution, but there are risks in either case,

Herb, since you have been taking Coumadin for a long time, I'm sure you realize that when taking these 2 meds together you will need to be really careful and consistent with blood testing.
