Me again with yet, another question to the pros! My 19-year-old is an avid swimmer and would like to spend hours in our pool with full sunshine. Is this ok being on coumadin or should she limit her exposure.

You all are a blessing!

Valerie

No problems here either.

Valerie, I can't remember if anyone has referred you to the Coumadin users best friend - Al Lodwick. He is a member here and has his own web site www.warfarinfo.com Al is an expert in the area of warfarin management (Coumadin) and is an invaluable resource to those of us that take Coumadin. Al and our "family" here have given me 1000 times more information, accurate information, than any doctor I've spoken with.

You and Alexia should spend some time exploring Al's site. I would also highly recommend ordering his book Warfarin: Rat Poison to Wonder Drug A Guide to its Use and Interactions.

When you go to his site, click on More Information About Warfarin and it will lead you to all the lists of information Al has.

But - don't ever hesitate to ask questions here.

Coumadin to my knowledge, no, but she may be taking something else that does not like being subjected to sunlight. Check everything she takes!

My Lasix prescription says I should avoid prolonged sun exposure. I have no idea why, but I guess I'll go along with the recommendation.

Chemicals in your pool?

Chemicals in your pool?

I am 3 years post-op..noticed this summer..that I coughed something awful.when I would get into our pool...Large .community....Even sitting near pool watching Grandkids.. this was in June ..Rained so much the rest of summer..Planning a labor Day Party down there..Will see if my cough comes back....Then, I will know, it's the chemicals..Bonnie

I don't use chlorine anymore, because it's a known carcinogen and can enter the body through the skin. If I was in a pool for a long time, I would sometimes get a tight feeling in my lungs, and my skin would get dry and weird. I would feel like I had to take a shower after being in the pool.

I'm using a pool disinfectant now that is actually silver oxide (tarnish). The water looks, tastes, and smells like water. It doesn't evaporate in the heat, and it is not interactive with chlorine, so you can switch back and forth without a break if you want. Over the course of the summer, it costs the same or less than chlorine, because you're not always messing with the chemicals and having to add more when it gets hot outside.

It has a non-chlorine, oxygenating bleach that you use weekly to burn off hair, skin particles and other gross personal detritus that gets into pools. And an algecide. You can swim right after putting the chemicals in, if you want.

I've been using it for five or six years, and I've never had an algae outbreak or anyone get sick or have their eyes burn.

Just something to think about.

Best wishes,

My clinic partner's daughter, a very dark-skinned Chicana college student, developed a melanoma from lifeguarding without sunscreen for four summers. The danger does not come from warfarin. It is the sun itself that is the danger.
