cpt228

i had an avr 11/05
had a reaction to warifin # 5
cardio switched me to coumadin
i have an extermely bad case of gas
to cario in 1 week
can the coumadin be the culprit

If you had a reaction to warfarin, why'd he put you on coumadin? It's like being allergic to asprin, but taking Bayer instead, they're the same stuff made by different companies. As far as the gas goes, never seen any correlation of the two here. (Beans however...is a different story) :D

cpt228 - was it you we were wondering if the issue wasn't the dye in the #5 warfarin tab?

As far as gas goes - could be an intersting excuse :D but one that doesn't bear out in the disclosure pamphlets.

warifin reaction

warifin reaction

cardio & pharmacist felt it could have been the dye or preservative used
generics r not exactly the same

The only true way to find out if it was an allergy to the dye is to use 1/2 of a 10 mg tablet of the generic warfarin. The 10 mg is dye-free. But you didn't say what the reaction was. If it was not shortness of breath, wheezing , a rash, or big welts it was probably not an allergy. One thing you will learn is that a doctors try to blame things on the generics when in reality they just do not understand how to dose warfarin. Most pharmacists will just agree with you if say that the doctor says that it was an allergy. I have done in excess of 35,000 patient visits for warfarin dosing and do not recall anyone ever having a true allergy.

Al:
What are the dyes used in generic warfarin and Coumadin? Is there a way to find out online? I'm curious if they're the same dyes.

Hmmm....here I thought that my husband's system was just going back to normal after his AVR....wondering....the windows rattle sometimes!

I think that there is some obscure place to find this, but I don't remember how to find it. I think it is an FDA website.

You can find the dye info at http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/warfarin.htm

Rxlist.com is my favorite drug info site -- they have the full prescribing info, which you can also get from the manufacturer's sites.

For coumadin (Bristol-Myers Squibb) go to www.coumadin.com for the home page, or http://www.bms.com/cgi-bin/anybin.pl?sql=select PPI from TB_PRODUCT_PPI where PPI_SEQ=91&key=PPI for the prescribing info.

For Barr Labs warfarin, go to http://www.warfarininfo.com/home.html for the home page, http://www.warfarininfo.com/138544.barr.pdf for their prescribing info.
