I am 46 years of age and have a leaky aortic valve. Sometime in the future the valve will need to be replaced. I also have mild eczema, which sometimes means that I scratch to the point of grazing myself. If I choose a mechanical valve, and have to take Coumadin, will my eczema cause complications?

Thank you.

I have the same comdition, on my hands only. It does not interfer with anything that I am not aware of. If you take medications, you may want to have a talk with your cardiologist. But as for it infering with your surgery, naw. I was free at the time of surgery. Then weeks later, had a flare up. Just finds ways to keep the stress level down as much as you can. You will be fine. Take care.

To really have a problem with bleeding you have to lose about 2 pints of blood. My favorite example is to tell someone to throw a quart of milk or oil on the floor and clean it up with Kleenex. If I were going to place a bet, I'd bet that you will not scratch to the extent that you will bleed more than someone with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

coumadin and eczema

I agree with the previous poster that scratching of excema while on coumadin should not be a problem with bleeding.

I have eczema, too, and have been on coumadin for about 5 years with the eczema well under control.

Recently I have begun to experience a widespread flare up of what I think is eczema. It is not responding to the steroid cream. My appointment with a skin specialist is next February. This caused me to do an internet search about coumadin/eczema where I discovered that coumadin side effects include "rash, and severe or long-lasting inflammation of the skin". This site also mentions "intolerance to cold, cold and chills". I cool down in October and am not warm until spring. One needs to know the correct questions to ask to get informed answers. Had I known prior to my surgery what I know now I would not have accepted the mechanical valve so gullibly and at least have known what to expect. On the other hand I'm still alive.

Every person is different and not everyone will react as I have. I have posted this so you may seek more detailed information about coumadin from your doctors and make a more informed decision.

Hopefully, the skin specialist will have some other medication that will help this itchy, red rash I am now experiencing.
