Could It Be Heart Related?

Jeff told me about something that happened today that really has me freaked out. He said that he fell asleep at the wheel today while he was out doing his appraisals. He said that this has happened before. He thinks that maybe his sugar levels are not quite right. He was been boarderline diabetic for awhile. I can't help but wonder if there is something else going on. I am, of course, really freaking out over this. I don't want to get a phone call from the sherriff telling me he crashed and died. I wouldn't be able to deal with that.

When I read your post

When I read your post

my very first thought was "sleep apnea." I would get thee to the doctor and ask for a sleep study. Does your husband already have sleep apnea that you know of? Does he wake in the morning not feeling refreshed - does he snore?

Anyway, that is my thought. I hope you find out what is causing this, but if I could place any bets....

I job share with a woman who is an insulin dependent diabetic. On Feb. 24th, her blood sugar dropped, she passed out and hit a tree, breaking her leg and ankle in 12 places. She is lucky to be alive.

Dangerous thing to wait on. Jeff should see his doctor.

Not impossible that it could be heart related but the blood sugar sounds more likely.

My husband no longer drives any "distances". I drive. He dozes off. No accident, but I've had to nudge him. With him, I think it is plain and simple fatigue. Has it badly, but then again, he has remaining heart issues that are not corrected, only managed.

He can get ten hours sleep, awake to the alarm clock, come downstairs, and says he could go back to bed and fall asleep for another ten. He tires very easily. Could this be the same thing with your son?

I'm sorry -

I'm sorry -

this is your son you are talking about. I wondered about that, but it was late at night, so I didn't check your profile.

Still, I do suspect sleep apnea with your son and Marybeth, has your husband been checked for sleep apnea?

I was told I don't have sleep apnea - if I do it is "mild" - but I am now wearing oxygen at night (much to my dislike mentally). However, the oxygen has made a world of difference in how I feel during the day. I used to be just like your husband - feeling that I could sleep ALL the time and never feeling refreshed when I awoke.

I also am now on thyroid medication which has helped also in my energy level.

Could be blood sugar, could be heart-related, could be a lot of things. But whether the cause is relatively minor or something more significant, I would get it medically checked out right away because falling asleep at the wheel could be deadly for him and for others.

Thanks everyone for your replies. He also thinks it could be his blood sugar. He has an appointment coming up with his doctor but I am trying to get him to go sooner:rolleyes: He hates doctors so not sure how far I will get.

Not sure where the confusion got started but Jeff is my husband not my son. Although sometimes he acts like one of the kids LOL:D

Thanks again
Michelle

Guess I was right the first time -

Guess I was right the first time -

Jeff is your husband, NOT your son.

One of the other posts said "son" and I did not even check your profile then - just thought I had been wrong in assuming you were talking about your husband.

Hope your HUSBAND finds out what is causing this and gets treated soon. It could be any number of things. It sounds like sleep apnea to me, but....I am no doctor. ;)

And you are right about husbands - sometimes they seem like our sons (sorry husbands out there!). Ha.

Syncope?

Syncope?

I had a friend with the same problem. She did crash her car and was in the hospital for 2 days. They did not diagnose her problem. I had an episode of syncope while I was a passenger in a car. Had lots of tests done but no definite diagnosis. I now have an implanted loop recorder for a year.
Could be lots of things but must be evaluated by a doctor asap. If his blood sugar is only borderline and he is not on meds, it probably is not that. Let us know, please, Try to convince him to be safe-he could hurt someone else next time.

Michelle,

What type of appraisals does your husband, Jeff, do? Just curious....

As for falling asleep at the wheel, that is a VERY scary thing ... and I'm bettin' happens more than we realize ... or, in some cases, are willing to admit.....

He does real estate appraisals. He appraises houses, condos, duplexes, pieces of vacant land and things like that. He is also approved to do FHA appraisals. He also appraises repossessed houses and sometimes they are down right scary inside. The company he works for also does commerical appraisals on businesses but you have to have a speical license for that.

I process all his reports for him so I get to see pictures of all kinds of cool houses.

Hmmm...that sounds like fun, actually. How did he get into that?

LOW Heart Rate is another possibility.

DEFINITELY needs to be checked out ASAP.

Maybe he should have someone ELSE drive
until he gets a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Classic Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Classic Sleep Apnea Symptoms

As has been mentioned, these are classic symptoms of sleep apnea. Does he also snore, or is he overweight? Additionally, sleep apnea is particulary worrisome for heart patients, because the apnea episodes produce "fight or flight" hormones which are detrimental to .... yes, your heart.

I've been treated for severe obstructive sleep apnea for about a year, and it has both made me feel better, and resolved some early signs of right heart failure.

Get it checked out soonest.

Jeff really enjoys appraising. He got into it almost six years ago. At that time his brother owned an appraisal company and he had been trying to Jeff to come and work with him for years. Jeff finally decided to give it a try and fell in love with the job. It's great because you are constantly seeing new things. Some houses he has appraised over and over but there are always new ones to do. Almost two years ago, his brother merged his company with a larger one. We were a little nervous at first but everything seems to have worked out fine. Jeff is even busier now than he was before. It's a good job that isn't too physically demanding so he was able to go back to it soon (too soon in my opinion) after his surgery.

Wow...that does sound like a fun job ... my goodness ... almost perfect for me....traveling ... seeing new things each day ... working with people... :).

Did Jeff have to go through any schooling or training for it? Would Jeff happen to know of any companies I should look at in particular for employment opportunities, etc.?

[And, sorry I got offtopic on this one, Michelle ... hope you don't mind.]

I always tell people I have 3 children - the 2 I gave birth to and the one I married :D :D

Seriously though, I do hope he is doing well. I think everyone here is right on target -- either sleep apnea, or maybe heart related. Not that blood sugar couldn't be it as well, but, I thought that he would have had other symptoms if it is just a blood sugar issue. Best of luck to you all. Hope they figure it out soon.

To be a licensed appraiser in Ohio, you have to have two years of experience. This means you have to find a company who will train you and have you work as an unlicensed appraiser for two years. You also have to take a series of classes. After all the classes are compleated you then have to pass the licensing test. As far as companies to look into I am not sure. Pretty much any appraisal company should be able to help or point you in the right direction. The requirements vary buy state but once you get a license in one state it is easier to obtain a license in a different state. We are close to the Michigan boarder and some of our appraisers also have Michigan licenses. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions you can always email Jeff directly (twoboysdad). He would be more than happy to help you.

It is really a great profession to get in to.

Michelle

Michelle,
I hope your husband is not driving! This could be a variety of things, sugar, heart, sleep apnea, seizures.

Please have him check it out ASAP!

And hello from your neck of the woods.
