My dr wants to give me a test called a Sigmoidoscopy, which is the same as a colonoscopy, but the equipment used is shorter in length. I take Coumadin as well as have an mechanical valve. He wants me to continue Coumadin as normal and not take any antibiotics for the exam. What do you think? Thanks, Robbyn

This test is not really an "invasive" procedure per se. I am sure you will feel invaded but it does not create any danger of bleeding (unless you have hemoroids) and, since it is a very short probe, micro chance of infection.

This test does not allow for polyp removal. It is just a diagnostic test that may lead to a decision for a colonoscopy.

You should be fine.

I had a colonoscopy while remaining on Coumadin, no problem. More painful than I had anticipated, though: Next time I'm gonna take a Vicodin about 20 minutes before the procedure.

Stay on the Coumadin and go for it. If it were Colonoscopy, I might change the tune a little, but they are only looking at the first segment and no snipping.

Sigmoidoscopy is NOT the same as Colonoscopy.

They are SIMILAR in that a Sigmoidoscopy looks at the LOWER PORTION of the Colon but NOT the entire colon.

I would still ask your Cardiologist about premedication, just to be sure and safe. OR, check the AHA recommendations / guidelines.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I feel better now - having the procedure done the way he wants to.

I can see having a Sigmoidoscopy while still on Coumadin, BUT I would want to double check about NOT having antibiotics prior to the procedure, just to be safe.
