Superbob is pinch-hitting for The Chimp in opening this week's weigh-in thread. The usual day for stepping on the scales for most of us is Friday, but by tradition, we begin it on Thursday, a practice we started to aid our Australian members in coordinating with us.

Summertime may have slowed down activity here a bit, but we're still going, and going, and going, like Energizer bunnies. :tongue2: If any newcomers are reading this, and are interested in shedding a few pounds, this Forum is open to all. We weigh in, we track in our own ways our progress toward weight loss/nutrition/exercise goals, and we have fun and cheer each other on. Sometimes we have "races" to particular holidays, such as Independence Day. We don't have one going right now, but we might crank one up -- maybe to Labor Day? -- at any time.

Superbob will weigh in tomorrow. Haven't had any major hits on portion control this week. Did do fasting bloodwork yesterday and then enjoyed a big breakfast at a favorite restaurant where waitresses call you "sweetie" and "honey" in wonderful Carolina accents. Used sugar-free syrup on my blueberry pancakes, so didn't put a hurtin' on the blood sugar.

Have basically four forms of exercise going now:

1. My daily knee-replacement exercises prescribed by the physical therapists.

2. The best walk Superdawg and I can manage in a humidity bath.

3. Exercise-biking in the community workout room overlooking the pool.

4. Aqua-walking in the pool, done when my grandkiddies beg me to take them. (I hate going there by myself.)

Rarely do I do all four of these in a given day. Two of the four on a given day is pretty much standard; sometimes three.

Hope all Throwdowners are well, including those we haven't heard from in a while. Feel free to jump in here any time and just tell us what's going on with you. We very much want to hear from you.

Cheerio,

SB, the Man of Steel

Well, Good morning to you, our man of steel! I wish I had the choices for exercise that you have at your disposal. We live in a detached home, in the city, so no pools or community exercise rooms. Our daughter just got married last month, so no grandkiddies yet. Also, we haven't had a dog for almost 20 years, so I have to walk myself. . .

I do have a membership in a suburban park district fitness center, near where I work, so I can usually stop there on the way home from work. I typically do 15-20 minutes on an Airdyne exercise bike, riding about 4 miles at a 15-16 MPH pace, then I power-walk another 15-20 minutes on a treadmill, usually at about 4.4 MPH, and a 14% incline. Either of these can easily get my heart rate up to the upper 130's, near 140, which is about as high as my cardio wants me to go. I also take walks, trying to get in a mile or two at lunchtime and another mile or two after dinner. Adding this all to the usual summer change in appetite (I usually want smaller portions of lighter foods in warmer weather), I've been able to lose a few pounds. Technically, I've met my goal of being "in the 150's" but I want to be solidly there so that the usual winter weight gain doesn't put me back in the 160's. As Garfield the Cat says, "I'm not overweight, I'm undertall." Being only 5'8" tall, my starting weight of nearly 165 was too much.

Annual progress (IIRC):
Starting weight: 164.6
This morning: 158.2
YTD: -6.4 lbs
Goal is to lose another 4 pounds or so.

Keep on truckin'!

Great report, Steve. Seems you have put together a very effective fitness program and worked out the logistics. I am indeed blessed to have so many options nearby -- I have no excuses! We also are only 7 minutes away from the beach, but Superdawg and I save that mostly for September to May when the crowds have gone down as well as the heat. In our first step into semi-retirement, we had the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia to walk, so indeed we have been greatly blessed.

Okay, my starting weight for 2013 was 265.

This morning I am at 256.2, well within my "see the 250s" goal, thank goodness.

So that's 8.8 down for the year. I ought to start thinking about "seeing the 240s" -- that would be almost skinny for me. :tongue2:

Okay, I think summer vacations may have temporarily reduced our numbers, but am hoping we'll get some more check-ins here shortly.

Cheers,

SB

I am in the process of getting it together. We have had a lot going on and subsequent eating opportunities/responses have occurred. To be honest, I know that I am up more than I want to be.

I am going to take another week before I require myself to weigh. So I am taking an unearned undue mulligan.

Good job SB and Steve. You two are doing excellently! Kudos to you.

I will return.

Being the controlling legal authority in the absence of The Chimp, I hereby award you a mulligan for the week, Kentucky Flash. Hope to see you back in action next week.

Just swing from one celebration to another, and enjoy Mr. Chimp! John Adams and Thomas Jefferson would have approved. Happy Birthday, USA!

All systems go:thumbup: .... We live in a great land and celebrate we should!!!!

One thing a chimp can do - make sure your pockets are empty when you weigh! Those bananas and cookies can add pounds wven when they aren't yet in you. . .

Steve thanks for the advice ... the banans and cookies are usually in the form of pudding and having a field day in my tummy:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Whoa Nellie! This week's Throwdown will commence smack dab in the middle of the biggest, grandest birthday party of all -- celebrating birth of the USA! Superbob is not planning too much dietary restraint for this occasion. Think we're scheduled to have ribs on the barbie for starters. If there's baseball, there has to be hot dogs. Will need at least something sweet decorated with red, white, and blue.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Sounds great Bob! I plan on treat or two myself!! God bless the USA!!

We're probably not doing much on the 4th. We usually can watch fireworks on the night of the 3rd - right from our back yard. We are only a couple of miles from several fireworks displays, so we can see all of the aerial pyrotechnics from those in our yard. It used to scare the dog so badly that he would hide under the bed. No dog anymore, and we two-leggers know what's gong on, so it is just cool to watch.

Tons of fireworks shows up and down the beaches, and our own neighborhood will sound like a war zone. All fine with me, but it scares the bejabbers out of poor Superdawg, who has been terrified already by all the recent thunderstorms. We will probably stay mostly indoors, watch the fireworks in DC, Boston, and NYC, and try to calm the Superdawg.

WOW -- help! When I try to post to Cooker's new Throwdown thread, I get a big fat "Not Acceptable" and am barred. What's happening?

to our Aussie friend, thanks for your friendly post on our Independence Day -- we will try to enjoy the fireworks but I know my skittish old dog won't. :tongue2: Cheers to you -- hope you will stick with us here.

I intend to. This forum has kept me sane over the past month.
