Well,
Today I heard back from my GP's nurse following the throat culture two weeks after finishing the Rifampin.

And of course, it came back positive for strep.

I have an appointment with an infectious disease doc this next comming Monday to see what he thinks is the best course of action.

Honestly, I wonder if I havn't been a carrier for many many years and if that isn't one of the reasons my heart valve got to the extent it was before the surgery.

FYI Guys,

God Bless,

Ben

So sorry that you are still not clear. This one will require more tests, I guess? Investigative stuff to try to trace it down for a cure? Like you, wonder if it was at root of your heart prbls? Please keep us posted. God bless

It just seems just as you start feeling better, you find out it has gone away. What rotten luck you are having. I hope they find out what is making it happen this way. You keep hanging in there. They will find the answer soon.

Hi Ben,

I'm sorry to hear that no matter what meds they put you on, the strep is still there. Sounds like your GP is really stumped. Hopefully the infectious disease doctor can shed some light on what is happening. I'm sure more test are in order. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Ben-

This is a real bummer. But you know what? The infectious disease guy will get to the bottom of things, I'm sure.

After Joe's last surgery, he developed serum sickness. He had a marvelous infectious disease specialist work on him and it was amazing. There was tons of lab tests, and they are able to figure out so much. I was truly impressed, that man was a genius.

So I wish you good luck on the hunt for nasty strep and will say a prayer that it can be zapped soon.

Ben,

I hope that the infection specialist will find a quick way of curing your strep infection.
The only good thing about strep is that it has remained, for all these years, sensitive to penicillin. A ten-day course of plain vanilla generic penicillin will almost always cure it. Could be that your problem is someone else in the house who is a strep carrier without any symptoms that is consistently reinfecting you.

Keep us informed,

Jack.

Ben -

Sorry to hear it. Hope you are feeling ok and get some resolution!

This is very interesting. Something to think about, but not related. It is my understanding that we all 'carry' forms of staphylococcus in our nasal cavity on our skin, etc. It is when the bacterium over produces that we contract an infection. Could this be the case with strep?

As a child and young adult....I had it all the time. Fortunately...I have not had a bought in the last 10 years.

Take care, and keep us posted.

Hi Ben,

Too bad to hear it has still not cleared up!!!

Do you know yet what strain of strep it is or will you know after seeing the infectious disease specialist? Did they give you blood cultures too, just to be on the safe side?

As I said before, I got vancomycin for resistant strep. It was no fun at all but long before it gets there for you I hope they can find something for you which does not involve vancomycin.

Take care of yourself,

/jessica

Hi Ben,

Guess this strep thing is getting kinda "old" with you. Hope they find a way to kick that bad tenant out of your system. Keep us posted as to the course of action the specialist takes with you. Woking all those long hours with little sleep isn't helping!

Sure hope you get all this behind you soon,

Rob

Thanks All

Thanks All

Thats a good thought Jack, I will have to speak with the Infectious guy concering others in the house. I am not sure what strain of the strep it is nor have they done any blood cultures, I guess they are waiting for the infecctious guy for that.

And Rob, you are very right, these hours I am working are not helping a bit. But I am working on training another guy to assists me with my duties. That should clear my schedule at least back to a normal 50 hours a week or so.

I will keep everyone posted.

Ben

Ben... Jack is on to something! When they gave you antibiotics for the strep did they medicate everyone in the family? My doc did this once when I kept getting strep.

I'm glad that they are sending you to an infectious disease doc. My experiences with one were very positive.... even though he ended up sending me to the hematologist/oncologist... lol.

Take care and keep us up to date!

Zazzy

P.S. After all of my bouts with strep it was learned that it was my brother-in-law who was the carrier!

No Zazzy they did not put the rest of the family onto meds, just me.
And man did I ever hate that crap they put me on. Made me feel horrible.

I will speak of this Monday with the Infectious guru as well.

Take care all,

Ben
