Hi everyone,

I'm worried about moms INR lately. She had her protime test done today and its 1.9 the doctor wants her to continue her dose at 2.5 mg Monday thru Friday and 5.0mg Saturday and Sunday.

Her INR been so low, last month Dec. 19 her INR was 1.5 and Jan. 2nd her INR was 1.8 and her doctor still didn't adjust her Coumadin. Last week Thursday I took her to the doctor because she was sick she had a flu and Urinary Tract Infection. She was taking an antibiotic called nitrofurantoin (macrobid) 100mg twice a day for 7days.

Should I call her cardiologist and tell him what's going on. Mom's family doctor is the one who monitors mom's INR. Her cardio told my moms doctor that she needs to be in between 3.0 to 3.5 because she had two mital valve replaced.

I need help. I hope somebody would responed my post.

Thank you.

The doctor who is dosing your mother's warfarin has little to no skill in this area. Any time a person is 0.3 or more units under their desired range, something needs to be done. Go to www.acforum.org and click on clinic locations and try to find one in your area. If your mother's doctor does not give her a referral to go, get another doctor -- QUICK. She is in danger of wrecking her valve or having a stroke. By all means call the cardiologist, do something to get her proper care.

Post your town in CA - somebody on here may know a good warfarin manager in the area.

Macrobid hardly ever causes interference with warfarin. It certainly did not cause the low INR.

Hi Al,

How are you? I called my mom's cardiologist and told him what happened. He spoke with my mom's doctor that monitor her INR. She told him that the reason she didn't adjust her coumadin is because she is talking antibiotics. I'm hoping that her INR would go back to 3.0 or 3.5.

By the way she is leaving Wenesday to go back home in Philippines. She can't take the weather over here is very cold for her. She will get her protime done over there. She has a great cardiologist over there that monitors her INR.

Thanks for your advice. I will still visit in the site even my mom's is over in philippines.

Thank you.
