Had my colonoscopy today -- while on warfarin.

My INR last Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving) was 3.4, and I had agreed to get it down to 2.5 for the procedure rather than going off warfarin with/without bridging.

I normally take 5.5mg X4 and 5mgX3, so I dropped to 4mg Thursday-Sunday. Before I started that wonderful, enjoyable prep procedure, I tested and was 2.5.

At the endoscopy center, I was asked why I was taking warfarin. When I said mechanical mitral valve, one employee said, "Oh, someone else here has a mechanical valve and is always having to go to her Dr. for tests and she has to pay a co-pay each time." I explained that I have my own home-tester and tested yesterday and my INR was 2.5. She noted that on the paperwork. Nothing else was said.

Just as I was wheeled into the procedure room and given the Versed and something else, I went to sleep. Didn't wake up until I was back in recovery and offered something to drink. Waited a bit to get ungroggy and then dressed & left.

Test results: no polyps. (2 or 3 were removed in 2001.) Come back in 5 years.

This morning I took 5mg warfarin and will take 6 on Tuesday and Wednesday. My guesstimate is that I'll come back up to around 3.5 by week's end.

Thank heavens my gastroenterologist agreed to doing the procedure with me on warfarin and also in an endoscopy center, not at a hospital. Saved me $ and also saved my employer some $$$.

Jim,
I took the opposite approach and pushed my gastroenterologist to do my 3-year follow-up colonoscopy several months earlier than planned and before my heart surgery. That let me get it out of the way and prevented me having another invasive procedure while I was healing from the OHS.

John.

Excellent, Happy to hear your good news..... all the way around! No polyps, no bridging, staying on warfarin. Perfect!

catwoman : good news! great that you got someone to work with you on this, makes a big difference when you can get what you want!

Jim : I would try and schedule ANY procedure before OHS, it is just one less thing to worry about having to do after. I am a year out, and still feel very much a newbie when it comes to stuff like this, although I probably could work through it if I had to.

Marsha, very happy to hear that all went well......Great you

stood your ground and good job.

So glad to hear that your colonoscopy was fine Marsha! And I'm glad that you're doctors were able to do it without having to take you off coumadin! I wish I could convince my doctors to do that!!

Great news, Marsha

I am keeping notes of your wise steps to follow when my time comes. I have not had any done yet. My doctor had been bugging me since I became 50, but I have been a coward!

Best wishes to hear good news all the time:)

Congratulations, Marsha...on the negative results. I'm supposed to have my five year in 2009, but I may need AVR first...so the colonoscopy will wait until I get the VR issue sorted out.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim honestly, it would be better to get the colonoscopy out of the way before the AVR.

Hey Marsha,

That is great news...woo hoo!!!!
