I will be having a colonoscopy on Friday and the doctor told me that I should take antibiotics before the procedure. Anyone here had this done, what antibiotics have you taken? what to do if you are resistant to penicillin.

The American Heart Association has a pocket size fold-out pamphlet that give the antibiotic protocols for invasive procedures, including alternatives if your are allergic to the standard Amoxicillin used for most dental and GI procedures. Check their website. Your dentist 'should' know the protocols and surely your cardiologist will.

I use 500 mg of Azithromycin (Z-pak) for my dental premedicaton.

Your doctor should be able to prescribe an antibiotic that works well for the procedure. I'm allergic to penicillan and I take Clyndamycin for dental work.

I just had a colonoscopy 2 weeks ago. My cardio recommended the same regimen as for my dental work (Amoxicillin 2gm by mouth 1hr before the procedure). My GI doc preferred I have IV antibiotics instead of oral antibiotics before the colonoscopy so that's what we did. The doctor that prescribes the antibiotic for you should know what to prescribe if you're resistant to Penicillin. Bottom line (excuse the pun :D) is that you do need to premedicate before the colonoscopy.

BTW...I got Ampicillin 2gm and Gentamicin 120mg IV before the procedure AND 1gm of Amoxicillin by mouth 6hrs after the procedure. That was a bit of overkill IMO but I guess better safe than sorry. After going through the prep it's not like the antibiotics were going to cause any GI side effects. :D

Not sure if I'm actually resistant!

Not sure if I'm actually resistant!

I'm only guessing that I might be resistant to penicillin because I've taken one form or another of the drug 4 times (each time for about 10 days) over that last 6-7 months. The last time was in December and I was given a 10day course of Augmentin for an ear infection, because of a plugged up right ear, redness of the ear drum and my ear drum was not working properly. I'm not sure if the Augmentin worked or not because I still feel some fullness in my ear, no pain, just a plugged up sensation. So, that's what makes me think I might still have the infection. On the other hand, I was told that I should take some acedophillius with the Augmentin because Augmentin kills all bacteria in you body, good and bad. I unfourtunately did not listen and ended up getting a yeast infection as a result, so that makes me think that the Augmentin must have been doing something. I'm just not sure. Also, is it ok to have a colonoscopy done, with an infection? I ask because I still have the plugged ear thing and am not sure if that will posse a problem?

I too

I too

had a colonoscopy two years and I also had intravenous antibiotics. I think I had to be there a little earlier so they could administer it.
