I'm looking into getting a home monitor from Roch.
This is what I received today from one of their rep's.

Not sure if this will help anyone in the States or the U.K. But I thought I would post this information, considering this monitor was selling at $999.99 CDN a month ago.

As of tomorrow April 1st 2008, the suggested retail price for the CoaguChek XS monitor will be 499.00$. This mean no more coupon.J All you need is your doctor's prescription for the use of this monitor.

If you should require any further information, please do not hesitate to call us at the 1-877-426-2482.

Last year I received a coupon and paid $499 also....well worth it.
I believe the process and price is different in the U.S.A.
Freddie, you are well on your way to becoming the proud owner of a new Coaguchek.:)
Keep us posted......

Well..........
I'll find out tomorrow if I'll be a proud owner or not.
Please, everyone say a prayer and keep your fingers crossed...Thanks

Fred, don't let your doc deny you this machine.....point out to him that you can continue to lab test for a while to make sure everything is fine.
Then tell him that you belong to a group of happy home testers.:) :)

Freddy:
If you need documentation to support your home testing, just call on me.

Bina's idea that you tell your doc to let you test at home and you will do monthly lab tests is sterling. That's exactly how Al got his internist to agree to his home testing.

Then, 5 years later, Al and I helped our internist set up his own "Coumadin Club" for his patients. It can work that way. Home testing is new to this side of the world!!!

Don't give up....And, if you need support, there are whole bunches of us here to support you with whatever you need to get this done.

Stay strong. You can do it!

Blanche

Hey Blanche , that may not be a bad idea.
Everyone could PM me by 2:00pm CST tomorrow, (April 1st) and I could print them off and show them to my Doctor.

Humm.... I wonder how many members would respond?

Hi Freddie,

You have mail.

In 2004 I requested members to advise me of their experienced with home monitoring, printed the answers and took them to my PCP. That and the training offered by the Toronto General Hospital brought him on board. Have you checked with the hospital that did your surgery for training?

Be determined and hang in there.

What's stopping you? the money? or your doctor? Sorry, that is kind-of blunt, but I am on disability, who would not cover the cost. I told someone I may not be able to dig up $500 for clothes or eating out or anything like that, but for this, I could find it ! Anyway, credit cards were invented for this kind of thing, weren't they?

netmiff,

Its my Doctor.
She denied once before; earlier in my recovery. But I'm hoping that now that I'm more stable in my range she will say yes.

be sure to check your tire pressures twice today. ;)

I dare any doctor to say no after seeing the Discovery CME tape on it and being given credit to watch it too. The link should be at the top here or anticoag forum.

DENIED....for now

DENIED....for now

Well....I have no prescription, so therefore NO INR home monitor :(

I can sorta understand where my Doc is saying......but gee whiz:(

The Doc is getting her medical students to research the machine...."THROUGHLY" I heard her say to them. She also wants to feel confident in the machine and with me. "No point on spending that kind of money if it doesn't work". Oh yes, I tried to convince her other wise. Then she was concerned about "how comfortable would I be poking my finger?" My response " if I was a diabetic you wouldn't think twice about asking that question - it would have to be done so I'd get used to it"

So, maybe not all hope is lost....yet

I'm to give them about 2 weeks to do their research, and then the Doc will get back to me.

Thanks to those who did send me a PM regarding home testing I really do appreciate it......I DID show them to her and she did read them. I even gave her the broucher (sp).

So, its another waiting game for 2 weeks  say-la-vee

Freddie, any chance you could try another doctor?? I don't know what the physician shortage is like in your are, but how about your cardio or surgeon?? or could they at least try to influence the one that keeps saying "NO"?? I was prepared to try all of mine (family, cardio, surgeon and ACT, but my family doc was OK with it, and did the prescription).

Also, is there anything to stop you from buying it in the US?? I don't need a prescription here in Ontario for the darts and strips, but you could stock up in advance . . .

I see my cardio dude on Monday, I'll see what he says. But I would like to keep my confidence with the doc I have now.

The shortage of GP's is unreal around here and my Doc comes highly recommended. I'm glad I got her when I did (even though she missed hearing my murmur 3 weeks prior to surgery).

I'll just hang tight for now.

But thanks for the input.

Have you contacted Roche Diagnostics?

Have you contacted Roche Diagnostics?

They should know what hospitals are using their products, pharmacists, nurses are qualified to teach their use? There must be someone out there using home monitoring.

My PCP teaches at the hospital in Hamilton where I had my surgery and when I contacted them in 2004 they were anything but helpful and he was unwilling to give me a prescription either. Thankfully I made contact with the Toronto General and my experience with over the past 4 years has been totally positive.

Keep persisting. It paid off for me.

Yes, I know Freddie has contacted Roche and received the info pamphlet (brochure) to show her Doc.
Now the Doc just has to believe that the thousands and thousands of home monitor users are in range with INR and avoiding complications.
