The story on the DaVinci robot's use in valve surgery finally aired on CNN's "American Morning" at 8:38 Eastern Time this morning (I saw, after the fact... ). It's on CNN.com's Technology Page though and the tech section editor says it'll stay up there all day (Monday 2/12).

Hi, all-

I?ve been scarce on vr.com since my surgery last spring, but wanted to pass along that CNN correspondent Chris Lawrence put together a story this week on a valve replacement surgery using the DaVinci surgical robot.

The story?s SUPPOSED to air this Monday (1/15) on CNN?s ?American Morning? (6:00-9:00 a.m. ET). I?ll try to find out Sunday the time for which the piece is slotted. Chris only knew on Friday that they said it was scheduled for Monday; the people who decide what time it airs -- and during which of the show?s three hours-- start showing up late Sunday afternoon and evening.

It?s possible the story will get bumped completely on Monday and air the next day or later in the week, depending on what else is going on in the news. In any event, I?ll keep tabs on when it?s supposed to be on and update here.

I had some sort of browser glitch (I guess that was it) that didn?t allow me to do more than get to the vr.com home page for most of the last six months...couldn?t post though no matter what I tried. Upgrading to Firefox 2.0 a couple weeks ago solved that problem. I?ve been sort of lurking again on the site since Christmas, but plan to check in more often now that I'm able to again!:D

Nine months since my operations at The Cleveland Clinic last April. Seems like a distant memory and yet like it was just yesterday.

Glad to hear from you Pat, and thanks for the heads-up. Someone new to the site was just asking about the DaVinci . . . anyone remember who it was?

It was B Miner, Mary. I will pm him with a link to this thread. Thanks for posting, Pat!

B Miner thanks y'awl

Thanks for the heads up re: CNN airing something useful. I will tune in and hope they do the bit. There are several sites where the procedure and record are presented....some medical and some business oriented. One can punch up Dr. Chitwood or Intuitive Surgical and get just about all there is to know about the advantages of daVinci. I'm still itching to get on with it and hoping the recovery projections are accurate. I got to git back to work! Thanks again! ( don't really understand all those icon opportunities, yet.)

CNN postponing robotic valve surgery story

CNN postponing robotic valve surgery story

Oh, well...
The story that was on deck for Monday's "American Morning" had to be postponed. Chris Lawrence, the correspondent, has headed to Missouri instead, covering the story about the missing boys who've been found there.

I'll keep track of it and try to get a heads up again about a rescheduled airdate.

DaVinci story won't air Tuesday...

DaVinci story won't air Tuesday...

It's now more likely to be on the later part of the week, but could be Wednesday (I know: the only thing that sounds certain is the UNcertainty! :p )

I had the DaVinci surgery back when it was perfected in 2001. They did a mitral valve repair with a Cosgrove (i think thats the name) ring and it ripped and my valve was leaking so bad 6 months later I ended up with CHF and cardiomyopathy and an extensive hospital stay. I ended up 2 years later and had the mitral valve replaced with a St Judes valve and that seems to be working very well for me. Just an input about what happened in my case. Not saying the surgery isnt good for other people. It just didnt do so well for me.

CNN DaVinci story postponed again

CNN DaVinci story postponed again

It won't be on "American Morning" on Friday (1/19). It's been a busier week for news than expected! I'll post when I hear the story's slated to run.

DaVinci robot story rescheduled

DaVinci robot story rescheduled

So the story on the DaVinci surgical robot being used in valve operations is scheduled to air Monday (1/22) on CNN?s American Morning (6-9am ET). The piece is two minutes long (don?t want anyone thinking it?s a documentary. This ain't PBS, after all ;) )

It could still get bumped to Tuesday or later, but set your VCR or Tivo if you?re interested. The decision on which of the three hours the story will appear in won't be made until overnight Sunday into Monday. I?ll try to find out though when the producers who make those decisions get in. If I do, I?ll post a more specific timeframe.

daVinci on the 31st

daVinci on the 31st

Keep in mind that the daVinci cannot do things the operator doesn't know how to do. I'm still set for a mitral valve repair on Jan 31st. Had preop investigations last week and learned even more fascinaating details. I am SO AVERAGE my procedure is to be TVd to places elsewhere as part of Univ of North Carolina's training program by Drs Nyfong and Chitwood. They promised me a DVD. Very interesting to hear of financial considerations as well as follow-up observation systems they are able to "leave behind." This is my first cardio procedure and I have total confidence in the robot and its drivers. Think about what could happen to the whole notion of robotics when (not IF) they do away with the hardwires and use satellites! Long about Feb 4th I'll let you know details.

I too had MVR by Drs Chitwood & Nyfong at PCMH in Greenville,NC...Is that where you are scheduled? They have a great hospital and are adding a huge heart center. Best of luck to you. You know Dr Chitwood had the same surgery himself 2 years ago. Im sure you will have a great outcome. Im just a Murphys Law kind of patient (LOL). Good luck.

Hi Alecia: thanks for....

Hi Alecia: thanks for....

Sharing. I assume you are a NC lowlander, too. What I would like to know is how accurate the recovery-time projections following and NIV are? I've been told three days in hospital looking and feeling like a run-over possum and then minimum of two weeks being a nuisance around the house. What i need is to be able to drive within 15 days of the surgery. Is that realistic? I know you can't account for glitches and problems, but howclose did your recovery match these?

sounds pretty close recoop time. I was driving in 2-3 weeks and working at 4 weeks even though I had some complications. Im actualy from Greenville,NC. I called the hospital PCMH, but its actualy University Health Care now. You will get excelent care there. They will even give you a nice red heart pillow to help you with coughing afterwards. Good luck.

Will set the VCR

Will set the VCR

Thanks for letting us know Pat. As you know Dr. Murphy here in Atlanta performed my mitral valve repair with the DaVinci Robot in July 2005 and I am doing great! I am so excited that this type of surgery is becoming more commonplace. Take care! Cindy
