To all our Vr.com Aussies...

I invite you all to add your favourite Aussie web-site or picture in this thread,,,

I was chatting to a USA VR'er recently and we realised many US people dont have a map of australia to look at so they can "find" us..
so I put my hand up to do the job!.:D
heres a map of Australia with the approx. locale of my house highlighted ...by the 6028 number and the lil red marker ! This is also where Perth is the capital of our state of western Australia...the states arent marked on that map...shall have to get another,,,

yeah I know its tough I am less than a mile from the Ocean

and a web-site for those who like to drool...:D

Rottnest Island is where I am booking my recovery stay after OHS !

Great idea. I know I am clueless when it comes to locales in Australia (as well as other countries). There is a lot of ethnocentrism in the US. ;)

My SO was in Australia for a few months about 15 years ago. He said it is very beautiful and has a certain rugged auora about it that makes it very appealing. I met a couple of the guys he worked with when they came here to visit and was taken by their attentiveness (is that a word?) and sense of humor.

Hopefully we can both come there someday.

I am in Melbourne this is marked on the map. As you can see I am long way from Aussigal over 3000 kilometres by car. 3.5 hours by air. Australia is about the same size as the 48 mainland states on the US. Melbourne is the capital on my state Victoria.

how 'bout this one...

its title is
"only in Australia"...:D

I can only guess that THAT sign is either on the Nullabor plain or the Stuart highway...two very long stretches of road from north to south and east to west...

have any Aussies seen it do you know the answer?

Please continue the geography lessons. I'm very slow at figuring this out, but it is helpful to have an idea where people live. Thanks!

Im not 100% sure but I think it is in the north of WA on the Great Northern Highway betwen Port Hedland and Broome. At the very least there is something similar. The phone is located at the Sandfire Roadhouse and nearby the road has been slightly widened to allow for the road to be used by the Flying Doctor. As you can imagine the odd tourist has been surprised to see a plane coming towards them on the road when they are in the middle of nowhere!!! [usually the road is blocked by the operators of the sandfire roadhouse - but emergencies sometimes have a way of bypassing the best laid plans...]

For those of you out side of Australia the flying doctor is an organisation that has developed from times when the ability to communicate and move between areas was somewhat more difficult than it is today. It provides a medical service to those hardy souls on stations / minesites in the outback who are several hundreds of kilometres from "civilisation". Some of their funding comes from the government but the majority of their operating expenses is procurred from donations and fundraising events. As someone who has spent 15 years working in remote locations as a geologist I am extremely grateful to know that this "mantle of safety" (their original catchcry) exists. Luckily I have not had a reason to make use of their services but I am a yearly contributor to their fundraising drives.

Some other interesting facts for you - sorry if I upset some of our Texan friends but the saying bigger than Texas doesnt carry a lot of weight this side of the black stump...

Australia's Size Compared
Australia is one of about 210 countries. At 7617930 km2, it comprises just five percent of the world's land area (149,450,000 km2), yet it is the planet's sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, USA, and Brazil. Australia is also the smallest continental land mass (or largest island).

Western Australia comprises ~33% of the Mainland Area at about 2,526,786 (with additional landmass associated with fringing coastal islands)

To give you an interesting comparison of the remoteness of area within Australia - The common boundary point (known as Sureveyor Generals Corner) between Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory has been visited by fewer people than have been to the South Pole!!! WA's total border which is primarily one straight line (with a little kink at the aforementioned corner) is 1,862 km in length.

Sorry for highjacking the thread a bit Aussigal. attached images give an indication of the AUS vs USA comparison in size.

regards

Russell

Champion job Arpy...only thing I would have added were imperial measurements for our US friends who work in miles not Kilometres but we can sort that later...

Todays addition is a lovely shot of 2 of my 3 boys having a turn on the boogie-boards at the local beach...

Burns Beach ,
Western Australia

aboutwhere that red marker is on the first pic.
