Had a fasting blood test done last Thursday, and got some brief results today from my GP's office. Diabetes and cholesterol readings were excellent. I am wondering though, how much of my low cholesterol might be "influenced" from my surgery.

Total = 90 (below normal)
LDL = 40 (below normal)
HDL = 32 (this is much lower than I've been before - usually I am like 42)

She said I am also slightly anemic. I guess I need to get back on the iron pills.

Are you taking any statins? Dick was put on a statin after surgery to protect the valve from calcifying and all his numbers went way below normal. Discussed it with the cardio and decided to take him off the statin- there was a difference in opinion between the surgeon and the cardio as to the benefit to the new valve. There have been extensive threads here about statins- just put in a search for "Statins".

Hi Der. Interesting about the anemia.........I bet that's part of the reason why your body was feeling feverish.

My GP made some odd remark about my cholesterol. I had come back right after the holidays with higher than desired triglycerides (I honestly think it was my daughter's brie and french bread binge over the holidays to which I happily tagged along on!!). When the GP then saw me post surgery, she said, oh, those numbers will all come down now that you're flushing through your system properly with your new valve. I had too many other questions for her and we weren't doing a cholesterol check then (but anemia, yes) so I just let it go.

Maybe there is an adjustment period and you with your by-pass and the new valve....... interesting.

I'm thinking the same thing -- I went over the whole blood work when I got home this afternoon. Everything is really low -- triglycerides are 89, Glucose is 90 -- I've just never had numbers that low. Plus I am concerned that my hemoglobin hasn't returned to normal yet. Right after surgery it was 10.1, which is not alarming do to blood loss during the procedure. But now, almost 4 weeks later it is still only 10.6. I am normal at 14.
