I'm curious whether or not anyone else had higher cholesterol levels post operation. Before my AVR replacement in late August, my annual July physical listed my total cholesterol at 135 (49/HDL and 71/LDL).

My test results this week had my total cholesterol at 173 (47/HDL and 102/LDL). Although still within range, I had always checked in with low LDL or the bad cholesterol. I don't believe I changed my diet that drastically and I'm wondering whether or not the Toprol Beta Blocker and/or the coumadin have any effect.

Has this happened with anyone else post surgery? If so, will the levels return to pre-operative levels?

Hi Allen,

Since starting the beta blocker we have seen an increased cholesterol. My total number has always been high. Even when I was a vegitarian. My doctor tells me to blame my genetics.

I feel Inderal (beta blocker) is only hindering the cause. It does help with my PAC's. Instead of taking a statin...they wanted me to try exercise and flaxseed. Time will tell.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Gina. I asked my cardio's nurse when I went in for my monthly "bloodletting" or pro-time test and she informed me that cholesterol levels may increase whenever beta or calcium blockers are used. She suggested I run another test in 3 months.
