Not sure what thread this should go into but here goes anyway...

Well it was only a matter of time i suppose!

And of all the scenarios i had imagined Chloe bashing her head in school in - this was not one of them!

I had just got her into school at 8am for breakfast club and was chatting to my friend who runs it before going round to my own classroom when we heard a crash and scream and my stomach told me it had to be Chloe. We turned round to see Chloe on the floor screaming blue murder between two PE benches. The little maggot had decided sliding backwards off a bench would be fun - obviously not taking into account that there was another bench directly behind it, so fell off and cracked her head on the corner of the other one. I picked her up and as i rubbed the back of her head, felt the hugest lump ever! She's never banged her head hard enough to make that kind of lump before, so 'UH OH' thinks me. Big bump + warfarin cannot be good! So called a taxi as stupid husband had his mobile off still as he has the morning off (whooooole other story!) and off to A&E with Chloe wailing about her sore head. Taxi driver made suitably funny comments about the doctors having to chop her head off! Excellent - cheers mate!
Got to A&E - explained she was heart patient, on warfarin etc etc and checked her in at the desk. Sat patiently and waited for 10 minutes... 20 minutes... patience ran out and I grabbed the nearest nurse to ask why she was dealing with a man with a squished finger when my daughter who takes warfarin and has a head injury hasn't even been looked at yet. The dozey receptionist hadn't told the nurses anything about warfarin! Great!
I won't go into too much detail about the very stressful day that followed except to say - STUPID, STUPID SHO'S!!!!! EVEN STUPIDER STUPID SHO!!!! and Oh my God I HATE SHO'S!!!!!!
But we're home now after 10 hours observations and Chloe running riot round the ward obviously fine. She's to have no TV for 24 hours, no school for rest of week (already had tears from her on that one!!) and we have to just generally keep an eye on her. I'm getting up every so often tonight to go and prod her about a bit - no doubt i will be a very popular mum tonight!!

I just knew warfarin and school would be fun!!!

Are those doctors orders???

Seems a bit harsh, especially keeping her out of school like that and she's only FOUR right?

Perhaps I'm missing something here. I know head injuries (even little bumps and bruises) can be serious when on anticoagulants but a kid's gotta be a kid too and accidents happen.

Dunno...

Really, Harpoons right on this one. She'll be fine. It's another growing up ugly scene that happened, that's all. I know mom is worried to death, but really, relax some, she made it through this and she'll make it through other events too. Unless she has concussion, then the medical community is way overblowing this one.

i agree

i agree

Totally agree with you both so am going on mummy insincts with this one. She's going back to school tomorrow with the lovely bump on the head! She's been running riot all day and has shown no signs whatsoever of concussion.

My exact words to the doctor when he discharged her were 'You know you completely over-reacted because you don't know how to deal with a child on warfarin'. The nurses on the ward all agreed with me. But if she didn't have wafarin i know what would have happened by now, so with all it's drawbacks i still love it!

Quick question though - does it take AGES for this bump to go down?? like when she bruises?? The bump isn't quite so pronounced as it was yesterday - seems to have spread itself out a little more if that makes sense??? I asked her if it hurt, so she smacked it then answered, 'nope', so i'm assuming it looks worse than it is.

Thanks for your replies

Sounds like a normal well designed conk on the noggin bump to me. If it's not all gone in 3 or 4 days, then perhaps have it checked, but I think it'll be gone soon.

Yuppers... It can take AGES for those little bumps to go away... Some never do actually, I still have a few bumps from my childhood!

Because she's on warafin it might be advised to watch the bump some. Keep an eye on it when you wash her hair and if it changes color (blue or purplish) or becomes tender to the touch or she complains about it, go see her regular doctor to have a look. Otherwise, kids get some WICKED bumps on the head that sound and look a lot worse than they really are.

It's normal and will go away in a day or two. You could try putting some ice on it, or alternating ice and heat, but generally kids won't sit still long enough for it to be effective. =)
