Janine Grespan on the new heart treatment

New treatment helps those with heart failure
Monday Jan. 31, 2011 6:45 PM ET

Some encouraging news about a successful treatment for heart failure, and the timing is good because the condition is reaching epidemic proportions in our aging population.

In Canada there are 500,000 cases and that number is expected to triple by 2050.

However, more patients are surviving and thriving with Cardiac Synchronization Therapy. It uses an implantable device in addition to a defibrillator, to helped the heart pump more efficiently.

Canadian Cardiologists, including several at a Kitchener hospital have played a significant role in a landmark trial that proves the therapy is successful in lowering the mortality rate of heart failure patients.

Greg,
Well done report by the news team. The patient at the end said you can't rely on hardware alone "It depends a lot on the patient. You gotta take control of your own situation or manage it too ... including diet, exercise."
I was just now feeling lazy and he just motivated me to get down to the gym and exercise. I'm going now!
Take care,
John
