Cath ? A week or two before surgery or the day before so it's one big surgery vs 2 ?

Any thought on this. Have heard from lynlw & she makes sense to me.

It was suggested to me by one dr that we do the cath the day before so I'm right there etc etc. but I'd if did it a week or so before it might be good too. Odd that there are so many decisions to such a high profile op

Also any thots on choosing a dr ? Hv consulted w- 2 of the best here & know I really can't go wrong with either one but I am a victim of buyers remorse. So look ing for thoughts. Thx. You all are super
( any st Louis avr s out there).
I travel a lot so hv gotten a reprieve til fen 2012. But will be ready for it. & excited.

Thanks to u all. Nancy Jane.

Nancy, If you want to either say the doctors you are considerring and ask if anyone else used them, Or you could try to do a search here, for the surgeons to see if anyone went to them, maybe that could help you with your decisions.

IF you want to search, I would just put the last name in the search box, (dont put dr. or every post with docotr in it will be listed) if you cant find it, it is the white box on the right hand side, toward the top in the same line that says home, forum, chat

I had a cath about a month before surgery, but the cath was to determine if I needed surgery. I don't think it matters either way.

My cath was about 3 weeks before surgery and it was fine. I found cath easy, no pain, no discomfort, and I was permitted to drive the next day. I was nervous and edgy as it was my first but I wasted way too much energy worrying about it.

Just be sure to use a very experienced, well skilled interventionalist and it should be easy on you.

I had mine the day before surgery, but I didn't stay overnight. I had it in the morning and left by 3 in the afternoon. I was fine and didn't think anything about having it the day before surgery. I think either way, you'll be fine.

My surgeon preferred that I have my cath 2 weeks before surgery and I was glad because I don't react well to
anaesthesia and had to stay overnight due to being faint and low BP.

I think alot of when to have the cath probably has to do if you are traveling a longer way or pretty local. Often (usually?) if you are traveling a few hours they''l scedual the cath a day or so before surgery so you dont have to make 2 seperate trips, which isn't a problem if your close.

I had my cath the afternoon before surgery, stayed the night and got surgery first thing the next morning. Saw my surgeon before surgery, made sure he had his first cup of coffee! :)

I had my cath about 1 week before surgery. My cardio wanted to be sure I didn't need any bypass of arteries or if I did they would do at the same time as valve replacement. The cath was easy, given medication that kept me calm and stress free, then went hope in the late afternoon. Nothing to fret over.

In the year before my AVR, I had two heart caths with very different experiences. We tend to believe that there is just one way of doing things in medicine but this is often far from the truth. During my first HC I received an anesthetic and it took hours to feel alert afterwords. For the second, (a monthy before my AVR) a different surgeon used very different drugs (local anesthetic & mild antianxiety) because he wanted me awake so I could participate. This mostly consisted of holding my breath at particular points. We were able to talk and he explained what was being imaged. When it was over, I had to lay still for two hours and I was alert with no unpleasant after effects. This second HC was a far better experience in every way.

I insisted to have my cath and get admitted to the hospital and surgery the next morning...that was a mistake for me...I reacted poorly to the cath meds and threw up during the procedure...I had trouble urinating after the procedure and my bp dropped to 40/20...it was a very bad ordeal...it might be unusual...But I do want to share it...It set that tone for surgery and wore me out greatly...looking back i'd have done cath then OHS another time...

who knew...the test really upset me...drug reactions were bad....ugh

Originally, my cath was scheduled to be the day before surgery this time around. BUT, I'm glad it turns out not to be the case.

I DID have pain and a lot of discomfort following my cath yesterday (November 7). My surgery, however, was postponed from today (November 8) to Friday.
