A friend of mine gave me a book " The Cardiovascular Cure" by Dr. John P Cooke. In it he claims the role of Nitric Oxide produced by the endothelium lining blood vessels is critical for prevention of vascular diseases. He also claims an amino acid L-argenine aids the production of nitric oxide.

Anyone heard of this chap or his theories ? He claims to have several nobel winning research papers backing him up and the book is impressive.

Another one of these "if it sounds to good to be true then......."

I've never heard of this theory Jack.

Be sure to note that it is directed at VASCULAR Disease (clogged arteries). Even if there is some benefit there, I woud doubt that it would help with VALVE disease.

I have read about the claimed benefits of L-arginine for coronary disease. I have been taking it for about a year and have not notced any improvement in my ability to exercise. Maybe I am not taking enough.

Many thanks for the heads-up on this book. I checked out Dr. John P. Cooke and found that he's Director of the Section of Vascular Medicine at Stanford University Medical School. He also has a Ph.D in physiology from the Mayo Clinic and was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. After reading your post and a description of the book on Barnes&Noble.com, I bought two copies--one for a friend and one for us. His thesis revolves around better vavlular health through diet, exercise, and an emphasis on certain nutrients that Noble Prize winners isolated as being crucial in enhancing the body's own natural defences the strokes and heart attacks. He doesn't propose radical solutions, but what looks like good preventative measures that can be used by anyone interested in heart health. Again, thanks for sharing this here.
