My back still hurts from surgery (2mo ago) and I was wondering if I will ever be able to go to a chiropractor again?
How about a massage therapist? any of you visit either? and if so when post op did you first visit?

chiropractor

Hello. This is my first post at these forums. I was diagnosed with aortic regurgitation in December of 05. I am a 49 year old male, and a Chiropractor. I am curently being tested every 6 months- I return to the Cleveland Clinic in Weston Florida in early August for repeat echo.

I have treated patients who have underwent many heart procedures: bi-pass, valve replacements, pacemaker implants, as well as other procedures.

Yes, you can safely be treated by a Chiropractor. You must be sure to tell your doc about your history and surgery. Your Chiropractor will adapt the technique for your specific condition. Try to find a doc who uses "low force" techniques; activator or impulse instruments.

my patients are also referred for massage therapy. You will have to wait until you are able to comfortably lie on your stomach. Some massage therapists have special massage chairs--but you must also be able to place your sternum against the chair. However, you can also receive a massage when you are simply sitting up.

I hope this helps.:)

Welcome, BackDoc. You happened in at just the right time. You are our first chiropractor and we appreciate your answer. Many have had massages but I am not sure anyone has asked about seeing a chiropractor.

Good luck on your August visit.

Sister lived in Boca for many yrs.

Glad to have you aboard.

My back also hurt very bad. About 3 weeks after surgery I went to a chiropractor. Like BackDoc says, I made sure I explained where I was in the healing process. He was very carefull and mostly just did a standing massage. I went a few times to get the relief I needed.
BTW, I never told my cardio. or the surgeon.... Don't know how they would of accepted it.

Thank you Backdoc!!

Thank you Backdoc!!

Your information was so appreciated...Today I will search out a chiropractor who uses those techniques!

I will pray for you to have a good visit in August!
Thanks again!!

If my memory is right, I went to my chiropractor about 2.5 weeks after surgery and he just used different methods to release some of the pressure. I continued to visit as I had discompfort and by three months he was able to adjust me like anyone else.
As far a massage therapists go, I see one and it is awesome. I reccomend one for everyone. Find a good one with great references.

I doubt your cardio or surgeon would have had any problems. I have several medical specalists as patients; including, my cardiologist (he was a patient long before my problem was discovered). I also regularly have patients refered to me by local medical doctors-family doc's, cardio's, orthopedists and neuosurgeons. Let's face it-times change. There are "good and bad" in all occupations and professions. In my opinion, any medical doctor who discourages patients from seeing me, is sadly behind the times and the 8 ball.

In fact, the surgeons I consulted with at the Cleveland Clinic were very familar with the demands of my profession, and told me they would wire my sternum extra securely so that I could get back to working on my patients as soon as possible, when my time comes for surgery.

follow this link to find a doc who uses the Impulse instrument: http://www.neuromechanical.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=50

this link will help find an activator doc:http://www.activator.com/research_04/page_003.asp

both techniques are extremely low force and totally non-traumatic.

I am glad there was finally a question I could help somone with. I have been lurking here since my diagnosis last December.;)

I feel for you. My discomfort was in the left sholder/blade area. Still fresh in my mind after 7 years!!! At the time...did not visit a chiropractor. Few years back I had have a flare up that lasted almost 2 months! Again, should have visited a chiro. Opted for my regular medical doc. Medication did not work. With the exception of a steriod which I am sure only masked the symptoms. But did give releif for a few days.

Wishing you all the best in your recovery.

well bummer.. there are no docs in my area that practice either of those techniques..
I will call my old chiropractor tomorrow (he only works MWF) and see what he suggests..
Thanks again!

I awoke one day with a very painful right lower arm..and tingling.... I went to an Orthopedist ..who gave me an arm brace....did not help..went back a week later, gave me pain pills. did not work..so he sent me to a Neurosurgeon for an EMG test..OUCH...those tests are worse than any torture test in the old days. ..After it was over..said..I don't think you have Carpal tunnel, maybe a pinched nerve. Went back to Orth. Doc..for his results..(Neurosurgeon)Took five minutes to read the report..same as what the Neurosurgeon had told me....Said , come back in a month?.I went to my first ever chiropractor the next day in my small town.. 5 visits..Told him all about my history..........He was so gentle..massaging my right shoulder..arm and hand...with something like a small hand held massager? Then just rubbing my hand, arm.....and lo..the tingling was gone..:) the pain had left a few weeks before..but I never wore the brace?.....I got a bill/statement...for $1,700 for the EMG test. Insurance has paid most of the bills... I think I only paid $50.00 for the 5 visits to Chiropractor. My Insurance allows me 12 visits. didn't need them all.:) ...I'm thinking the pain was from maybe hitting my arm?....It healed itself..but tingling kelp going..and I'm sure the 5 visits to Chiropractor cured that. :) :) :) :) He (chiropractor) gave me some Biofreeze....BackDoc..can you buy that OTC?True story..for Mary/Danny (members saw me at mini-reunion)...:D Bonnie

BioFreeze

BioFreeze

BioFreeze is generally only distributed through doctors office's. I can't keep enough in my office, so may patients are in love with it. Call around to a few local Chiropractic offices, you'll find someone who carry's and sells it. It isn't expensive.

You deserve a medal for your bravery with the EMG testing. I've been through it, and it isn't something you want to do every day:eek:

From the description you gave, it sounds like your Chiropractor was doing some myofascial trigger point work. The tingling in your arm was the result of a pinched nerve. I'm glad you were able to get the help you needed.

Hey Marky - Thanks for starting this thread. I'm 11 days post op and feeling pretty good, except my right shoulder is really hurting. My whole back and both shoulders feel pretty tight, understandably so with everything they've been thru in the last 12 days. I'm going to look into chiroropractic and massage.

Welcome BackDoc! I hung around a long time myself before taking the plunge and posting. Great to have you here.

Thanks,
Liz

I do remember him hitting..something..and I would say..Ouch..Maybe the trigger point thing. and he would back off..so, it was a pinched nerve.. ..I am the 4th largest poster on Valvereplacement.com....Been here for 4 plus years...:) Just addicted...:D so, I can be here for members like you...:) .....I did back off..a little during this time...But, up and running again..:D ....I did take his (Chiropractor's advise) to try not to sleep on my stomach..for my arms go up above the pillow.Underneath, ect..that will cause numbness...Welcome and we will be here for you..:) Thanks again..Bonnie

Liz, have someone massage your shoulders & back - usually that's all it takes. It should be done at least 3X per day to avoid the pain coming back. The pain & cramping in my shoulders and neck were the only things my darvocet didn't touch post-ohs; only massage helped; and it did the trick. This is advice we routinely give people on here - everyone has trouble with it - they pin your arms behind to you enlarge the field.

Of course, a chiropractor wouldn't hurt, but I doubt you need one.
